I got my first call for a loan signing to day and the guy tells me its for 7pm. Unfortunately I couldnt do it. This is extremely short notice. Is this very common? Should I travel with a suit and my notray gear at all times?

Pretend you're a girl scout. Always be prepared. :)

All joking aside and to answer your question, yes, most signing services call with short notice. On the other hand, a lot of title companies call with at least a day's notice.

Remember, we're at the mercy of our hiring company. If it's a SS, they're at the mercy of TC and TC is at the mercy of final HUD approval.

BTW, welcome and happy signings!

Short notice is 1 hour or less

Not sure if you are in AK or CA. 6 hours is a lot of notice for me. I would always have your stuff with you so you are prepared.

I'm always ready. Only time I'm not is when I'm spending time with family or out of town.

I recieved a last minute signing once while I was working in the yard. I told the caller that I didn't have time to change clothes or clean up. The caller said that was OK they're waiting for me. I guess the dress code only matters when it's convienient for the SS.

To be in this biz you have to be ready & available. If you're not, they'll call the next person on the list. This biz requires a lot of flexibility, especially at EO. Some notaries even go completely mobile, with a printer in the car to be able to print docs while on the road. Your success in this is going to be up to you.

A few rules
Phone always on
Gas tank full
Keep your shoes shined
A set of clean pressed clothes ready to go
Extra paper and a spare cartridge

And a smile when in your voice when you speak with the schedulers

Mike

Also tell your friends......

when planning an outing. If it's a time that you would normally schedule a signing, I also let my friends know that our "lunch date" is based on my not getting any calls. My only exception is Sunday because I don't accept signings on Sunday. They makes jokes, but they also respect my business.

Re: Also tell your friends......

When you are self employed, there is no short notice. If you can do it, you can. Never expect the courtesy of a few days notice...you will be going broke waiting, and they will not keep calling you back if you keep rejecting them starting out. If you are new, expect to be taking all the ones that their regular closers cannot take...means late night, early AM, or busy times when the rest are full to prove yourself and be a steady "yes" when they use you. Just the way this business works. Good luck.
