KEEP

What do Notaries keep as proof that they did the work & what do you keep for tax purposes?
Most of us keep a Journal, but if you should get audited, then the Journal may not be enough.

Quicken H&B and a copy of all confirmations

showing agreed fee; also a paper copy of all corresponding invoices marked w/ date paid & copy of check. Also have my journal with their signatures (and my journal is not signed until after the job is done - it's the last thing I do) - fees are noted and date paid.

Each signing has a small "packet" of papers for it - confirmation, notary instructions, MapQuest or GoogleMaps directions (for mileage verification), copy of return airbill and, if faxbacks, copy of cover sheet showing faxbacks and transmission report. In those signings where I have to pick up funds I also keep a copy of the first page of the HUD with the check attached showing check matches funds due.

If you get an audit, most likely the will compare your deposits in your bank accounts to your bookkeeping. Your claimed income and your deposits should be just about the same.

Re: Keep a receipt book for GNW...

Use a receipt book for your GNW customers that leaves you a carbonized copy, and include all GNW with your income reporting.

I do that too...for GNW I do an invoice

and the carbon copy of the receipt is stapled to the invoice...
