Question - scanning documents

I don't consider myself very tech savvy--but I was able to scan signed docs to email to the title company. Problem is the file is too large to send by email--any way to compress the file so that it's small enough to send. We're talking over 50 pages so the file is over 130 MB.

thanks for any advice you can offer!

Make sure scanner settings are black-and-white (BW) not grayscale or color. Then make sure the dots-per-inch (DPI) are 200 or 150. Are you converting or scanning to PDF? Use PDF settings for e-book, screen, or something similar. Making PDF's for printing don't compress as much. Those are for commercial printing of books/documents with photos or artwork.

Good luck!

I turned off OCR and I have never had another problem with the file being too large.

Convert to a pdf file is best. Or break it up into smaller clumps but the best way is to lower the scan resolution as low as possible & then still convert to pdf. It takes a lot of messing around to get it right, but once it's done--it's done and the next ones go far faster. Don't ask how I did it because I don't remember anything but spending a lot of time googling. But it got done.

Copperhead/VA makes a great point. I forgot about this. I rarely use OCR or "Optical Character Recognition". This makes the document actual "text" and not just a picture. So on your scanner the setting may say OCR, or searchable PDF, or searchable document. Just make sure to choose a plain old PDF setting.

I use a secondary program, Nitro PDF, that has the ability to split files into more than one file. There are also several free programs that allow the editing or splitting of PDF files.

Another easy fix - I use Adobe SendNow (free)

Scan docs as pdf - open the scanned file (with Adobe Reader), and the SendNow opens automatically in the right margin (once you've actually downloaded the program). Enter e-mail address to send to - add message if you wish, and send. Done.

You'll receive two notices via e-mail; one when file has been completely sent, and another when recipient has opened it. Recipient receives the file as a link to download.

I've used it for years - have sent MANY huge files this way, and multiple files in single send, never a glitch. Free version has constraints - files deleted in some time frame, maybe 30 days? I don't remember.
