This is a follow up on the posting below
where despite the slowness of the business right now, I decided to turn back a closing due to lack of payment for a previous closing. The following is a copy of an email I sent to both NationsDirect (2 stars) and Old Republic Title (3 stars). I've blanked out info about the BO.
I appreciate your response but not your policy of making notaries wait up to 60 days to get paid - disrespectful and not acceptable. How do you expect to run a business successfully when you treat the people who actually go out and do the closing so poorly? I have not received any payment on:
10/10/13 Ms XXX
NationsDirect XXX
inquiry 11/11/13
2nd inquiry 12/4/13
3rd inquiry 12/5/13
I am going to look up Old Republic's email address and send them a copy of this email. In addition I am going to "turn back" another Old Republic closing I have from you - I do not want to take the risk of being "stiffed" on two deals. I will hold off involving them to see if you want to wire the funds into my account ASAP for both closings (averages out to 30 days which is about right). The reason it is ASAP so as to give you time to find another notary to do the upcoming closing - the BO should not get "stiffed" as well. Regardless of the outcome, I will not accept another closing from NationsDirect and will report all this on Notary Rotary (which you probably could care less about). I will be waiting for a short while - but in reality I can just envision your mirth as you watch some peon from the hinterlands struggle to get paid.
End of email to NationsDirect.
Guess what, I received another closing for the same time period at a higher price. I did send a copy of the above to Old Republic, but it probably will not make any difference. I called the BO and told her I would not be coming and someone else most likely will call. I expect to be criticized for accepting a signing from a 2 star but went with it because of Old Republic's 3 star rating - and up until an hour ago I had no prospect of any other business. So ends the saga of the poor peon in the hinterlands struggling to get paid. I will let you know if the check "which is in the mail" ever shows up.

Re: Fighting with NationsDirect could be a waste of time
but they have been reported to the title company, told to take me off their list (would have anyway) and got a signing turned back because of NationDirect's Policy (Policy being short for "carved in stone") and told that their "Policy" stinks. It may make some small difference. I'm going now to add my two cents to SC.

Just think about what you just said.
" So ends the saga of the poor peon in the hinterlands struggling to get paid." If that's how you think of yourself, that's exactly what you will manifest in your life! Think about it!

Oh, please, Shoshana ...
don't be so judgemental! Howard was simply expressing his frustration ... most likely not how he thought of himself, IMHO

Re: Yeah, thanks John, that peon business
is my interpretation of how NationsDirect looks at notaries and is no reflection of my self esteem. I often find that a little humor (peons struggling in the hinterlands to get paid) on NR doesn't go over well. The bottom line is that I turned back a closing due to slow payment on a previous closing, told NationsDirect to take me off their list of notaries, and reported them to Old Republic. And a better closing came along for the same time slot. Happy ending all around I'd say.

Good God, little Miss Sunshine.
Can you not see he's participating in a bit of hyperbole?
Now if you'll forgive me, I'm going to think about Belize and try to put the 25 degrees and blowing snow flurries happening around me.

Hi Scott (not everyone knows you don't 'go by' Howard)
Appreciate your comments on this company and delineating your plan of action. Sometimes giving a company a chance seems to be worthwhile. Appreciate your candor and sharing the G/B/U.

Scott or Howard if you have a check for me, "peon" - well maybe.

You could save yourself a lot of trouble by using Signing
Central. There are many of us who won't work for Nations Direct in the first place. They are the ultimate low-ballers. Yes, I understand that biz is hard to come by these days & everyone has to do what they have to, but it still pays in the long run to be more selective. You will not be treated well by this kind of co. The choice is yours, though.

Re: I love SC, it was the 3 star
title company along with slow business that suckered me in. But as the day for the closing approached and I had not been paid for the previous closing I decided to turn it back. It will be interesting if I hear back from the title which I will share - not holding breath.

Don't rely on the star ratings only. Read the comments
posted by other notaries. I base my decisions on that.

Absolutely, Marilynn! Have seen some 4-star ratings, but
the most recent comments for 9-12 months with 1 and 2 star ratings throughout. Doing the drill-down is worth the time.

No, expect to be criticized for *complaining* after accepting a signing from 2 star. You are free to accept signings from whomever you choose. However, when you accept work from deadbeats and the deadbeats behave like deadbeats, don't complain. No one wants to hear it.

Re: There is an old saying in business
that if you are not getting some bad debt, you are not out there pushing your product to the fullest. If all you ever do is hang back waiting for solid gold deals, you will be missing a lot of work. I agree that to take work from a 2 star company is a risk - but I would not conclude that because of it "nobody wants to hear about it." You'r rude and gained nothing by it - a zero star performance.

Re: There is an old saying in business
As I said, you're free to "push your product" to deadbeats, if you so choose. But no one wants to hear whining about what you volunteered for. So if you think saying that is rude, then consider me rude. And yes, there is something gained by saying that - and that others reading these threads can learn how NOT to volunteer their talents for deadbeats.

Sorry, but I don't think that philosophy is going to work
well for you in this biz. If that's your approach, then IMO you don't have a right to complain about payment issues. You're assuming a much greater risk by accepting work from low-pay, slow-pay, and deadbeat cos.
