Doing service in city
When the you are doing a service in the City and the docs state in the County of_____ what do you do? Do you put the city name in the County of blank? Or do you slash through County and write City then initial? I've been told both ways...

The "venue" on a document is:
State of (input whatever State you're conducting the signing in) County of (input whatever County of that State you're conducting the signing in)
The city does not matter. At least, those are the instructions for California and most other states. When in doubt, please refer to your State notary handbook or contact your Secretary of State (or who ever commissions notaries in your State).

Veta:
Here's the link for your Handbook. You may want to print it and become VERY familiar with it.

I think there are some independent cities in VA that aren't in a county seat. Hopefully someone from VA will reply.

That sounds right to me considering that VA cities are not in or part of counties.

Just had someone else tell me that..very interesting
We have unincorporated cities here but they're still part of a county - never heard of "independent cities" before - thanks for the lesson!

From the VA notary handbook
Both the state and the city or county in which the act was performed must appear. In most cases, this information appears above the language of the notarial act. The notary’s registration number must also appear as part of the notarial act. If a form or certificate lacks space for this information, the notary must provide it somewhere on the form or certificate.
Are all cities not part of a county and I wonder if VA is safer to Use the city in all instances.

In Virginia cities are independent from and not part of a county. Towns, however, are part of a county. So for the venue in Virginia, if you're in a city use the city name; if in a town use the county.

Correct. In my area of VA we do not have counties. The
cities serve as the county government. For the notarial cert., where it says State of VA, County of.... I put/City of Virginia Beach. We are, of course, a Notary at Large, meaning statewide. The venue is always where you are when the signing is taking place. That's different for us, because I cover at least 4 cities.

Missouri is the same way. St.Louis County and St. Louis City are completely independent of each other, and residents of each will be quick to point that out, especially county residents.

i've only seen notaries do: State of Louisiana, Parish of Lafayette (or Acadia). I've never seen one add the city.

Really? Quite often I include this:
"Swo\rn to and subscribed before me in the State of Louisiana, Parish of St. Charles, City of Boutte, on this [xyz] day of [abc] 20...."
This is the norm in my neck of the woods. What's your experience in your neck of the woods for Louisiana?
