Low-ballers ARE ashamed of themselves ...
2/8/13, I posted Msg #454763.
2/14/13, I received the following: "Yolanda, was it really necessary to post a negative comment on notaryrotary on this email I sent you? I was polite in my response to you telling you that I didn’t realize that you were that far away. When we pull notaries up on these websites it indicates that they are within a certain mileage. Obviously it is not accurate over half the time so my apologies for emailing you with this request. Our fees increase with distance. We try to get closers somewhat close to the borrowers so they don’t have to drive too far out of the way. Every area is different so I never know how long it actually takes someone to travel there since mapquest or other mapping tools can be deceiving.
I didn’t realize I offended you this much for you to post such a negative rating on us. "
So, I took the time to send this clarification: "I went back to Notary Rotary, where I posted, and re-read my post (copy below). My post relays our communications. Yes, you were polite. I never said otherwise. I was only advising the forum what CSS offered for a refi edoc signing. I totally understand that some mapping websites may not give accurate driving distances. And, it's also totally understandable that you try to get a notary close to signing location. By the way, for my area, I find that googlemaps.com is close to accurate.
What is not understandable is your reaction to my post. If you feel it's a negative posting, then maybe you shouldn't make such an offer regardless of distance. It's obviously an insult to both you and I.
My post was not a rating. It was simply an observation."

I'm not so certain that it's the fact they are ashamed of themselves. This is (or should be) business. It's not personal. There is a distinct demarcation between that which is shameful and that which is "upsetting" (for lack of a better word). Businesses would seem to get more upset than ashamed at the fact that you posted an assessment of what transpired. After all, no one likes negative publicity. Business practices might have to be amended to something more palatable for all interested parties. Of course, there is always the option which was thrust upon the dodo...

Yoli, you should be able to post what you want when you want as long as it follows NR's guidelines. Now, IF SS wanted to get someone close to the borrowers they would ask the Notary "Where are you going to be one hour before the scheduled appointment?". They should stop using that MapQuest, googlemaps mantra, It's flawed. BTW if your fees listed are $XXX why would they offer you less, it's just dumb. And everyone knows that! Keep posting as you see fit and THANKS!

HERE HERE! This would be a variation of the problem of induction as outlined by Hume in "An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding".

Only thing we need to know is CSS offered garbage fee!
From your original post:
"Received an email from them (aka CSS) this morning offering a refi edoc signing to a location at least 35 miles from me for a total fee of $75."
Seems this got lost in all the hoopla about distance, Mapquest, driving, e-mail apologies, etc. This pathetic outfit deserves a "negative rating" just for being in existence if it sees nothing wrong with $75 for an e-doc signing (even if the borrower came to you)!
I wouldn't have wasted any time countering. Anybody offering $75 (of less than $100) is so laughable that I don't even get to the negotiation stage with them. They clearly don't take us seriously, why would a notary take them seriously? You know you're dealing with pirates and a SS that takes advantage of notaries. The only thing they're serious about is keeping most of the signing fee.

"Where are you going to be one hour before the scheduled appointment?".
Great point, James. If you read between the lines, basing their fees on where our home is, assumes that the notary is sitting around waiting for them to call and doesn't have any other business going on. I guess that's disclosing who they are targeting to handle their clients' signings...

Re: Mapping software
For those that care: I have used Micro$oft Streets and Trips for about 10 years (generally before GPSs). I prefer a nice 8.5 x 11 map in my hand, that I can read at a glance. I have found it to be highly accurate, it almost tells me which side of the street the house is on. Mileage is accurate. Can buy a version that comes with a plugin gps dongle for laptop which turns laptop into a large gps. Can do multiple way points. (Schedule multiple stopping ponts) Usually less than $30, I bought 2013 software only version around holidays for $15 on sale at Omax. I do have navigation/gps in my phone, but I prefer to use this, with phone backup.
