Mtg. Co. demanding copy of Notary DL

Any one getting this form in their pkgs? I had one today (1st time ever) and I flat out refused to provide it. I attached a note to the form stating:

"I have attached a copy of my Notary Commission & E&O Insurance to verify my identity as a notary in the State of Florida. That is all I will provide."

I am not borrowing anything and absolutely will not comply with this request from the borrower's mtg co.

Have not seen that, but I think I'd ignore it. At the most, I'd provide a copy of my Commission.

I have been providing my DL and other documents when

I first register as a SA but I refuse to provide the information on each individual file. Further I find it interesting that because of laws regarding copies of DL many lenders no longer require them from the borrowers and yet they want mine.

Re: I have been providing my DL and other documents when

This is a request from a mortgage company, not a signing service or title company.

Re: I have been providing my DL and other documents when

Usually it is a condition for funding. I provide it. I would much rather maintain my business relationship than turn away good clients.

Since when has the notary providing a copy of their DL a condition for funding. I understand the borrower providing this, but the notary isn't apply or receiving anything from the loan.

Re: I have been providing my DL and other documents when

I think I would just write "on file with notary hiring company".
If they don't like that then too bad.

I will NOT provide my DL to any entity with my NSA biz. I do not have to provide to an employer. I provide a copy of my Tribal ID--it has my pic, address (POBox) and etc.

If I am not borrowing money myself, the lender, TC, etc does NOT need my DL.

I recall having a conversation with PAW on this subject while he was still with us.

I seem to recall his telling me making copies of a FL drive's license was prohibited for FL licensees. I never questioned him on that point as he I know that he knew what he was talking about and was not offering an opinion, but was providing me with a statement of fact.

I have no trouble with this.

There is only one way for a client to confirm the identity of the person who meets the borrower - and that's by some form of photo cross-reference. Yes, people do accept signings and send someone else in their place. If you'd like to see that type of action tightened up, you might consider giving the clients the tools to do it. If they don't know what you look like, they have zero to confirm with.

The mortgage co. isn't my client, the TC is.

I don't mind showing my ID to the borrower when I arrive for their closing, I've done this several times. I will not send a copy of my driver's license to the borrower's mortgage company. Why would they need it? How will they store it? Who would have access to this info? I wouldn't even have any privacy protection because I'm not one of their clients. In this age of rampant identity theft there is no way that I will comply with this request from a mortgage company.

If someone other than the notary the borrower's were told to expect showed up it would be very evident from the notary seal that is used, since it would have a different name and the TC can deal with the original notary.

Re: The mortgage co. isn't my client, the TC is.

I would never show my DL to anybody except a police officer - (usually when I'm being framed for failure to come to a complete stop or some nonsense like that!). Notaries see my passport.

However, I too, have been screamed at by SSs and TCs that "the loan will not fund" (like that's my fault??) if I don't provide a copy of my DL. So I blacked out my DL#, my birth date, DL expiration date, etc. etc. so that all lthat's left is basically my picture and addresss. Never had Prospect or anybody complain.

Anyway, this issue has been discussed a zillion times. There are notaries who have no problem with revealing all. I'm definitely not one of them. To turn over a copy of my DL to some idiot SS, lender, TC, whoever, thinking that somehow they might give a hoot about protecting my identity - particuarly since they have no privacy policy that applies to the notary - is not my idea of anything I'd want to do. Gawd knows what they do with the copy. Yikes!

Re: I have no trouble with this.

They get you name from the hiring party after the hiring has be confirmed.
You call to confirm the appointment time. You arrive at that time. Show your business card or DL to them when you get there.

I tell people I'm 6'4" and a buscuit short of 300 ibs. They know who you are.

It always gets me that notaries are so adamant about

copies of their D/L's, when we get copies from the borrowers all the time. I wouldn't routinely offer it, but also wouldn't refuse in a situation like that. You can provide all the documentation you want, but there's no photos on any of it. There are those who "share" that type of thing within a group of notaries, believe it or not.

Re: It always gets me that notaries are so adamant about

It's our job to get copies of borrower's IDs. It's not our job to ID ourselves, beyond our notary commission. If the borrowers have problems with it, they can take it up with the lender.

To me, it's a privacy issue. Every loan pkg has a privacy policy from either the TC or lender, and often both, that extends to the borrowers. We are given no such privacy coverage by either group, meaning they can do whatever they want with a copy of our ID. No thanks.

1st responder...now read whole thread and

believe that this request is way over the top. Not funding because of no Notary DL? C'mon...that makes no sense at all. Who dreams this stuff up? And, more important--Why? All the reasons for not doing it were nicely stated by previous posters. This is just a very bizarre and unjustifiable request. Addressing 'substitute notaries' concept-- again--absolutely no sense whatsoever with that weak excuse. After the fact, a picture of a notary is provided to people who weren't there??? This makes sense--how?

Re: 1st responder...now read whole thread and

I agree it makes no apparent sense. After all, is the borrower being asked to inspect the driver license and make sure the name on the license matches the notary's name on the documents? If not, it's just meaningless. A non-notary substitute could just insert a copy of the real notary's driver's license after leaving the signing location but before dropping the docs.
