New Bill in AZ State House
The powers that be want signatures on all early ballots to be notarized. The bad part is that they want the notaries to do it for free!

Sometimes you have to wonder exactly what the thought process is on some of these bills...

Absentee ballots no longer require notarization here
but it's in our statutes that we cannot charge a fee to notarize them. Nor can we charge a fee to notarize a veteran's paperwork relating to his application for benefits.

In OK, can't charge for absentee/early ballot Notarization, but if I travel, I charge a travel fee. No conflict.

So, is being really busy a good excuse for not
notarizing for free? Who's going to pay for my gas?

Nobody -unless the law says otherwise, they have to come to you. And if you don't have an office, they need to find a notary who does.

Sounds to me like just another impediment to be placed in the path of some voters to restrict their access to voting. It is an unfortunate scenario that is playing out in many Republican controlled state legislatures lately.
The more difficult they make it to vote, the fewer people will vote, whether it is in person or via early voting mail-in ballots. We should be making voting easier, not more difficult.

It's that way in AL, but the County Clerk who gave me the ballot offered to notarize it right there & chucked it in their vault. So, I didn't get mine by mail, I asked for it while I was at the Courthouse for something else--I was able to early vote too! Knowing this, I offered to notarize ballots at no fee to my friends & told my mailman if there were any shut-ins on his route, I would be glad to help them out. This is a lightly populated agricultural community: I'm not so busy I can't do some service.
