Stuck in top of box? Put in FX by mistake. Box picked up before dropped off. Could be lots of reasons.

All excellent observations, but
I'm going with a multidimensional wormhole opened inside the box after the package was dropped thereby materializing the packet in a distant galaxy where an alien civilization is viewing it as a divine command document.

Never use drop boxes and always get a receipt! Lost packages are a nightmare and the notary always takes the blame.

Grammyzoom, I disagree. If I follow instructions, the TC/SS can go ahead and blame UPS/FedEx, not me. I can always provide tracking # and drop date/location. If they are going to claim I'm a liar and didn't drop the package, I obviously shouldn't be trusted with confidential documents in the first place, so I wouldn't want to work with that company again.

Driver may has missed the pickup. I would contact UPS and find out if that was the case.
Sometimes we are unble to get to a drop off store and must use boxes. In 7 years, I have not once had a box drop that wasn't picked up. One thing I do is keep the track # and if I use the box I go to the website, enter the # and request an email be sent to me when package is delivered. If I didn't recieve the notification, I'd be on the phone with dispatch to find out why it wasn't picked up.
I hope this can be rectifiedfor you asap.

KCG, you do realize that you are doing the exact same type of handholding/micromanagement that NSAs hate to be on the receiving end of, right? Drop with FedEx/UPS. Let them do their job. If the title company doesn't receive the package, I assure you they will investigate.

There's a box near me I never use--driver is early!
The driver gets there every day, clears out the box, and heads for the coffeeshop.
Around here there are flags on the Fedex boxes that label them as "has been" or "has not been" picked up for the day. Sadly, UPS doesn't have this feature.
The local UPS store warned me about the dropboxes down the line--because I often drop off at the shop and the driver goes there before the dropbox. I'll call the shop if I know I'm close to the cutoff (4:40, 4:50 for the dropbox) sometimes by 4:00 he has already been and and gone. I call and make sure that he hasn't come yet--and Kathy, the gal who works in the shop will try to keep him talking until I get there. Now THAT is customer service!
Aside from those two stops, the next later drop off is Boeing Field, the airport (not our main commercial airport) which is several miles into rush-hour city traffic, so when my city's downtown driver is early, I'm in a bad spot. Best thing to do if I can't get to the airport is drop it at the UPS shop where they'll scan it and I can prove that the driver is earlier than he was supposed to be.

Yes happened to me many years ago, it had a $20k check in it. They had it on record that it was pu but had no idea what happened to it. It was a mess. I don't EVER put packages in the overnight boxes anymore. And when a company wants me to send UPS I ask for a FEDEX account number.

UPS lost a package right around Thanksgiving and never found it. Packages just don't disappear into thin air. Their customer service is null and void. Most of the companies I work with use FedEx if I have to use UPS I drop off at store to get proof of drop off.

NOT notary related: Shipped a med school application and check via UPS, 2ND DAY AIR envelope. Showed picked up. Disappeared from sight!! No further info EVER found. 6 months later get a call from hub. Found intact, a little greasy, fell off sorting conveyer belt, under or below belt, completely out of sight. Was only found because belt was down for maintenance or service. Person had to wait 1 year to apply to school 'cause they missed app deadline. True story. "Stuff" happens.

This happend to me over the holidays but with Fed-x. Thankful they received by fax-backs with a copy of the certified check. Got approval to drop package. Fed-x package never seen again. No trace that it was ever picked-up to this day. I'm so thankful, that I keep my fax transmittal and approval email that they received fax-backs and to drop package to prove that the signing was completed.

Yes and I no longer use a drop box. Cover your A$$ and go directly to UPS or FED EX store and get RECEIPT. I learned the hard way :-(

Sometimes it's not possible to do that...in some areas a staffed location may be upwards of 30 miles one way. If you MUST use a drop box, at least document time/date/conditions right away via email. Of course all this doesn't help the OP....it seems like this has been happening more often lately with both FedEx and UPS

Re: AHH, counters can be probs too
Two fedx O/N taken to fedx/kinkos office to drop. Proudly hand written labels by me. Each reweighed and new weight/delivery labels printed there. Call from east coast title co. next morning. Right package, wrong docs inside. OMG, did I switch packages? NOOOO, I did them one at a time, including label, so this wouln't occur, including label inserted, but not sealed in plastic pouch. Problem occured at counter, Kinkos employee was not careful and switched shipping labels at counter. Manager saw it on video. Needless to say I took over coordination of cross shipments and refunds of all charges myself. Not a happy, but a satisfying end.

OUCH! Who'd a thunk it? I think that since they (FedEx) mixed the labels up, they should have at least eaten the $$ on the shipment. As far as your signing fee (if indeed I'm reading this right and you ate that), that's the stand up thing to do, and I applaud you. Doing the right thing can sometimes be painful.

Re: AHH, counters can be probs too
They did refund 4 shipments $$. All loans closed on time, in part due to my quick action when notified of prob. I refused to let Fedx handle it. All carrier's misdirected/misdelivered package process takes too long for our needs. I coordinated withTitle/Escrow directly to make it happen. One even had to sched someone to come in on Sat. so it could close. Happened within last 30 days, so check's in the mail, right? It'not JUST what we do, but HOW we do it!

Fedex switched labels on me once too!
Thankfully, both packages went to Pittsburgh. I hired a private courier to go swap the packages. Within three hours everyone was happy. Except me.

Re: Found dropped small Fedex envelope
Sorry, didn't finish. Found envelope on the ground in front of Fedex box in puddle. Glue on it had almost come all the way loose. Fortunately the senders name and phone number was on front. Called a Employee credit union so were probably pretty important. Girl was very thankful. Left it on the ground behind box. Fedex guy must have dropped it. I'm assuming it had been there all night.

Good for all of you who stand in line
For a receipt. I normally do not but this post got me paranoid. 30 minutes in line and 10 to do packages and the guy switch a label. Nightmare. I'm dropping and sprinting from now on. Too many things can go wrong either way and I'm saving my valuable time for the call when I have to explain where the heck the package went to.
