Asked for copy of MY driver's license
I just had a closing with a NC atty. He asked for a copy of my driver's license. I gave it to him but I was a little miffed by his request. Anyone ever had this happen?

Yes, several times, and my answer is always no. In fact I don't even show it to anybody except under the unfortunate circumstance when a cop is trying to frame me for speeding. I use my passport for notaries.

Re: Curious, why would you use your passport?
Well, under the (possibly misguided and misinformed) belief that when the UPS or mailstore notary left her book lying around the store countertop (which I've seen) or decided to take it home where her boyfriend could thumb through it or throw it in the trash when it was full, at least it would not contain my address and DL number and therefore be less useful to identity thieves.
Same with people who have no business seeing my DL much less having a copy of it. (See aformentioned attorney.) What's the attorney going to do with the copy? Keep it in a secure place forever? I dont think so.

I don't mind showing it to people, but . . .
I don't mind showing my DL to people. Some people are just suspicious and nervous, and I want to see their DL, so they want to see mine. But I'm with you: why give them a copy? If they don't want to give me a copy of their DL, fine: fax it to title yourself. But what are they going to do with my copy? Keep it in the office where all the staff, coming and going can see it? Eventually throw it in the trash?

I have had a borrower ask to see my ID because there was a lot of confusion as to who the notary was suppose to be, so his L/O told him to check my ID.. :-/

I am really surprised that so many people let me in their home without asking for proof of who I am.
I carry a shrunken and laminated copy of my notary certificate and show it, my biz license and if asked for a picture ID, show my Tribal ID. It has my POB on it for address and I personally know the person in charge of my personal file within the Tribe. She will verify over the phone that I am a Tribal Member and the Tribal ID number but you have a court order to get anything else.
