First tip of 2013 for new notary business owners

Don't use your SS# - get an EIN

Protect your SS# - give the signing services and other hiring entities your EIN.

Good advice! Also used it when I opened up my business bank account.

Second tip of 2013 - go big, or go home.

Well, what I really mean, is that there are just some things you don't want to scrimp on.

A good office chair, printers and places that you sign up for work, for instance. You've got to have a place that won't make your back hurt when you sit for long periods of time marketing your business, you need a good reliable printer (or, two), and you've got to pay for a premium membership here on NR. Smile

You get a free fax line here on NR...that's huge. Plus, Signing Central, and better placement on the directory.

Great tip Brenda!

Im still amazed how many use their SS# instead of applying and using an E-I-N. Its so easy to obtain. Have a Happy New Year friend!

Thanks for all the great tips! Happy January 3, 2013...my first two signings of the year, did not flub up and write 2012 in my notary instruments. Yeehaw...laying low today, caught a bad cold all on my own.

Brenda, would you recommend an EIN for part-timers as well? I mean REALLY part-timer?

yes, for part-timers..

The IRS has a page online, but it's posted to be down for a few more days. As soon as it's up I am getting one; why not? it's free & you have to file SE paperwork anyway, even if part -time, random, whatev er the status. I should've gotten it already...the cleanup caused by ID theft is a real time-sucker not to mention the stress.

Re: yes, for part-timers..

True Darlin, think I will go ahead and do the same. By the way, I suppose the "AL" in your ID is for Alabama, is that right? Just wondering because that's my home! Born and raised and lived in Montgomery for most of my life until about eight years ago. Guess this isn't conversation for the forum, just curious though. Thanks for the info., I'll keep checking the IRS site and get my TIN # as well.
