Accepted a signing and then checked signing central
How can a company have a 4 star rating and comment after comment about slow and no pay? She called at 6pm for a 10am closing tomorrow. I looked at the docs and they were strange. "Page 6 of 13" and that was the only thing in that attachment. Another attachment had 5 pages of all kinds of stuff the buyers were supposed to fill out and it would have taken time for them to do that and still sign their 120-something pages of other docs. I emailed her and said that I checked signing central and she had a bad payment record and asked if she could Paypal me. "No. Net 30. We are 'catching up' paying our notaries." What? I emailed her back and said I was giving the job back. No response. I called and the office was closed for the day, so I "pressed 3 for emergency." I told the lady that I wanted to make sure she knew that I was giving it back and they had to find somebody else. That woman got snippy and said that they pay net 30 and that's it and I had to do the signing because I accepted it. Again, I said their payment record was bad as recently as April. I said I would gladly do it but they needed to Paypal me. "Well, you're not going to get a lot of work that way!" I said "Maybe not, but at least I know I WILL be paid for the work I do." Seriously, how can a company have a 4 star rating and comment after comment about slow or no pay?

Not your problem, huh? Too bad, well, give the work to some other stiff then. You only work for the best!

They have a 4 star rating. Who rates them?

Thank you Bev.... care to say who it was?
You did the right thing. I know it is difficult to turn down business but if everybody did what you did tonight it would help put the deadbeat, low balling, non paying, "catching up" idiots out of business. SC is a Godsend for us. Amazing how these losers always get a nasty attitude when you tell them you saw negative info on SC.

Yes, who was i?t. There are those that do not access SC but do read the posts. Naming them helps us all.

A GREAT reply!
"Well, you're not going to get a lot of work that way!"
I said "Maybe not, but at least I know I WILL be paid for the work I do."
Also, please name the hiring agency so we all know. It's not like they'll ever call you again ... or that you'd ever work for them ....

A friend of mine went through that last month!
A friend of mine took an assignment from them, but things were funky and not lining up. Same thing - she gave the assignment back - they yelled at her 'You'll never work again". She felt terrible - but it sounds like it was a good move.

You know what? We work for ourselves, and we can turn back any closing we wish. If they have a bad payment record, you are doing yourself a favor. Some SS are bullies and try to intimidate or say they will blacklist you. Good for them. If they cannot clean up their act, pay by paypal in the very least to show good faith, run the other way. I never feel terrible telling them the truth after I check them out...the only time I feel terrible is chasing payments down from deadbeat SS's and having to write it off in the end. Calling them, leave a voicemail, and send them an email is all you have to do being a professional. Keep your record of attempts of contact so when they send you the docs and you do not go, they know they dropped the ball, not you. If they cannot pick up the phone to take your call before the closing, just think of how they answer the phone after the closing trying to collect your check.

Notary ASAP, Orange, CA
Started working with Velvet and staff April 2008. They were great to work with. There was always someone available if I had questions. Gave me plenty of work and paid (usually) 30 days. Last time I worked with them was January 2011.
She paid $100 per signing - regardless of distance, package size, faxbacks, etc. And, that's where my dilemma started. I spoke with Velvet, and emailed, numerous times about a fee increase, especially for additional service. She claimed she couldn't afford to pay me more as title wasn't paying her much. However, that as work picked up and she got more, I'd get a better fee. That never happened. In fact, they expected more and checks were getting slower.
When I quoted them my base edoc fee of $125, they wouldn't agree. Velvet finally told me they couldn't use me for that fee. Advised her to call me when they could. They've since called a couple of times and still won't agree to my fee.
All our expenses have gone up. Wonder if they've gotten a raise ... hmmmmmmm.
It's too bad they now have a reputation of slow/no pay. They used to be good to work with if you could keep the signings close by (considering their fees).

Re: Notary ASAP, Orange, CA
The "catching up on paying the notaries" did it for me. I'm used to seeing checks cut at funding to realtors, sellers, vendors, and anybody else. I like signings and I'm good at it. However, that being said, there's a whole lot of other things I'd rather be doing than working and not being paid in a timely manner or at all.

"It's too bad they now have a reputation of slow/no pay"
Really? A reputation of NO PAY? Unless they completely messed up the signing, we have never not paid someone for a signing.
Slow pay? Fast pay? Yes to both, depends on the file. But we do pay.
BTW... Why did you take a signing from us two weeks after posting this if you thought we wouldn't pay???!!

That's a really good point
"If they cannot pick up the phone to take your call before the closing, just think of how they answer the phone after the closing trying to collect your check."
I had not looked at it that way, but that I'm sure that is very true. It also shows they may not pick up DURING the signing, when needed. I'm going to point that out to my friend. Thanks!
