Brother HL 5470DW
Just bought a Brother HL 5470DW (40 ppm) Wow and Yipee Ka Ya. Bought it because my 5340 died. Only problem I am having is when I wake my 5470 up each day it trips the circuit breaker. After that it prints all day at 40ppm with no problem. Minor annoyance, but is anyone else having this problem before I call an electrician? TIA

Thanks for your response. I've been using Brother for 4 years with great performance. Too bad they decided to put out a piece of crap. I will start shopping for something more reliable. I would also appreciate any input from u folks experience regarding laser printers for this business. TIA

I have this printer and it is plugged into a power strip. It has not tripped the circut breaker.

I thought power strips were for power surges coming in, not going out. I've tried plugging in to a power strip, but it still trips the circuit breaker.

Maybe you need a bigger circuit breaker for that plug and calling in an electrician to change the circuit breaker would be a good idea. Second idea - move the printer to another circuit to see if you have the same problem. Third, check what else is on that circuit and see if you can move those items to a different plug/circuit. Fourth, have an electrician create another circuit line/breaker for those pieces of equipment.

Please read Clem's response and links. Brother printer has an electrical surge problem reported by many that trips circuit breakers. $500 for an electrician to fix a $200 printer. Don't think so. Again, I've used Brother for 4 years, but would appreciate input on other printers for our business. TIA

I've been using Brother since 2006 and love them! I have the MFC-8890DWT and the HL-5370DWT and have nothing but good to say about them.
The 8890 replaced an MFC-8220 last year. Got that 8220 in 2006 and it was a workhorse until its demise in mid-2012. It was immediately replaced with the 8890, which I got at Amazon. Shopping around, I decided my second printer should also be a dual tray that uses the same drum and toner as my main printer. Got the 5370 at ebay.

The article also stated that 15 amp breaker not good enough - needs a 20. Maybe, as Sue suggested, it needs its own breaker, or removal of some other things.

Wow, I have a Brother 5370D and never had a problem with the circuit breaker, I would try putting it in a different spot.

5470 my friend. Different model. I don't have a problem with my back up 5340 and the 5470 has been in every room in my house including my patio. Thanks for the input.

Sounds like a potential fire hazard. I wouldn't trust it.
I have the 5370 and can't wait till the thing quits on me. Hate it. Can't wait to get another HP

Go to amazon.com and look up this model. They sell it on-line and there are plenty of reviews on the machine. There are many complaints from people who bought (and returned) this machine because it tripped their circuit breakers. You might call Brother's customer service number to see if they have any suggestions. I have this same printer. Originally, I had it in my kitchen, and noticed it dimmed the lights when it powered up. I moved it to a bedroom, and it doesn't dim the lights in that location. Also, it tends to draw more energy when you power it up from the off position. If you leave the machine on continually, it goes into the sleep mode. Printing from the sleep mode doesn't draw as much energy as if you go from "totally off" to "on" with the power switch.

I keep my 5370 on sleep and no problem. First print does dim the lights, so it is pulling a big spark when it starts. My circuit is in a bedroom and does not share a circuit with an appliance or something that will snap it. I have a microwave and treadmill sharing. If I forget and warm up a bagel in the a.m. while mama is power walking, I get a bunch of nasties when I go down to reset it.
