IE & Google Chrome browser problems...tearing my hair out
Up until today I have been picking up edocs by clicking the link in the e-mail sent to me and completing whatever steps are needed to view/open/save/print edocs with absolutely no problems. IE has been my browser of choice. Today---nothing works right. Yes, I can get to the website, but when attempting to view/open/save/print docs it'll spin for a while and then I get a message "File contains virus---deleted it"...words to that effect anyway. To make a long story short, my computer guru guy tells me to try Google Chrome as the browser. OK. And it works--sorta. I still get a 'virus' message, but Chrome (unlike IE) lets me ignore all good sense, common sense, take a huge risk, imo, and OVERRIDE the warning...and, yes, I can now pick up the docs.
Can anyone explain several things to me: 1. Why did IE work yesterday but today I need Chrome? 2. Why does a company think that us having to override a virus warning to pick up docs is a cool thing to do?
If you can answer this, use little words please and plain English, OK?

I still use IE despite the fact that so many don't like or trust it. It's never given me any major problems. I did recently upgrade to Win7 and the latest Adobe Reader. Your problem may be in some area other than IE. Have you tried running "C-cleaner" then restarting?

If you're running AVG antivirus, it may cause this problem. If so, you need to uninstall AVG (may need uninstall tool to completely remove http://www.avg.com/ww-en/utilities). Then reinstall latest version.
Hope this helps

Firefox is great, but the problem here happens with both IE and Firefox. That's one reason I suspect it's AVG. I might be wrong. Please let us know.

No AVG. Yesterday OK. Today not OK. No changes between.
Maddening. All protection/security is fine.

You may have picked up a virus that is causing downloads to be rejected. I had this happen on my wife's PC after she downloaded some games for our daughter. Had to use Malwarebytes to clean up the mess.

The virus message is not coming from your browser, it's coming from whatever antivirus software you have installed. Most of those update on a daily basis, and it's possible that the latest update has caused problems with your system. This is not uncommon with some of the free packages - I had to dump AVG a couple of years ago because it was causing all sorts of problems with my system.
Quick solution - disable your AV software and download the document package but do NOT open it! Enable your AV software, and then have it scan the file you just downloaded. Chances are it will be just fine and safe to open.
If the problem continues to happen, contact your AV software's support team and ask them what the heck is going on...

Thank you all for many good suggestions. Much appreciated.
I've got workarounds now...but am not very happy as I have yet to actually 'solve' the problem.

This may be the ZeroAccess rootkit virus. I like Robert's suggestion to use MalwareBytes (free download) to scan for this. I use MalwareBytes on my own and others' computers all the time and it works very well, although rarely it may not clean something. It does work on known variants of ZeroAccess.
Keep us posted.

Well, I found this article dated June 2013 regarding the ZeroAccess trojan that can cause the symptoms you describe. Of course I can't be sure, but here is a link. It's a little depressing, I'm sorry to say. I hope you can get to the bottom of this easily. I just don't think you should delay in getting to the bottom of this. I use google chrome but had to do a system restore to an
earlier date on my laptop because of some virus I (must have) inadvertently downloaded. I don't typically download or open unknown files/programs to my laptop because my kids have demolished three computers with viruses over the last 13 years with downloading games and watching YouTube videos. Google Chrome and Mozilla have been awesome, plus I have virus protection. I was shocked I let this one slip through, but I'm thankful I was able to do the system restore to a week earlier, (before I could've downloaded the virus) and it got my laptop back to normal. I have the system RECOVERY disks as a back up if I had to wipe the entire system. Last year, I dropped the laptop and damaged the original hard drive and had to replace it, and so I had to purchase the recovery disks to install on the new drive. All in all, it cost me $100 to fix ($80 for the hard drive, $20 for the disks) and about four hours of the disks installation and all the updates that needed to be reinstalled, but it was waaaaaay better than buying a brand new laptop! Thankfully this time around, the restore function worked and I was able to save my files too.
