Stay Cool, Stay Hydrated

It's day three of the hottest weather which is setting new records. Early hot weather for extended period of time.

I've just got a few signings today, then I'm heading for the beach and a shade tree. 108 here for two days, three more days to go. Then we're supposed to cool down.

Drinking a tall mason jar of water with lemon juice and wishing I could wear shorts today with sandals but of course cannot. Everything is at title or borrower's business. In Santa Barbara we rarely need air so many people do not have it in their homes.

Still working on some of the loans that should have closed last week but did not or have prior to funding conditions, like subordination agreements. etc.

Well, maybe "skorts" if they're long enough! Who'd know?

(Just kidding . . . I want my signers looking me in the Eye - and no place else!)

btw, wasn't it Atlantic City beach mayor that banned inappropriate beach attire on the boardwalk?

Post made me think why reminders/cautions needed

Once I commented to a borrower that "his home was very organized" and regretted saying it almost immediately - not because he expressed any dislike for the compliment - but it clearly made him feel Uncomfortable. Who knows, maybe he was taunted for being a "neat freak" or some other like . . . I don't even like to notice belongings in peoples' homes lest I'm tempted to comment.

And the other night I had to use the restroom (hydrating to stay cool) and would have asked the borrower (my 1st time) except we were using his neighbor's home, as his wasn't furnished yet! So I didn't feel like I could impose. Fortunately, it turned out well and I headed to nearest Community center later after the signing and pckg drop off. Borrower was such a nice person and so were his neighbors that I could have used their facilities without issue.

What comes "natural" (making a friendly comment, using the ladies' room, shaking a hand, looking someone straight in the eye) may or may not be appropriate if culture or circumstance at the moment doesn't call for it. What we think is "common sense" may not be to someone else.

A friend/LPN from Togo told me once that her mother was asked not to breastfeed on public transit; I was like, "I could have told her that." She said where they're from, that is completely natural and nothing shameful - unlike here where everyone exposes from mid-section down. Funny, in her native land, THAT is not allowed. Below-waist is "sacred." Smile

In one office store I visit, the clerk has very "interesting" hair - like it's bright reddish orangy yellow (really) AND she wears a knit cap. So I asked her if her boss made her wear it (I don't think they can tell employees to cut hair or lose the beard now); she said 'no.' It was her preference. Ok. Most people don't wear knit hats indoors.

I'm sure many of you have similar stories of what's acceptable in your neighborhood!

81 is hot for SB...it is 108 on top of the mountains around Santa Barbara.

It is interesting that when you get up higher and in the canyon areas, we call it the hot side of SB,
it can be so much hotter, no breezes. The waterfront is the best place to be in SB this week, not walking around a bunch of concrete buildings, sidewalks, asphalt roadways.

Can't wait for fall. Huge trees are dropping all over the place due to drought conditions...

It has been at least 113 for the past 3 days here

in Ridgecrest, and I think it even got up to about 117 yesterday. It was 105 at 9:30 last night. It's been miserable. Hoping for a cool down this week; our AC/swampcooler unit labors constantly but it stays around 85 in the house, and even the cars don't want to stay cool with the AC going. It's gloriously cool in the early morning, but as soon as that sun rises, it's like an oven.

I'm in the same, err, boat... as Priscilla...

Both of us pretty much live in proximity to Death Valley. It's been miserable. The reason it's so bad is because the high pressure has such a tight cap over the area, the warm air has no place to go. Here in the desert it usually gets pretty cool at night, which then makes the heat bearable during the day. But, when this happens, the temperature doesn't go down at night, so by 8-9 i n the morning it's already 95-100 degrees.

My A/C has not stopped in 3 days, otherwise it would be 90+ degrees in my house. I'm not looking forward to that power bill.... Frown

Hot in the Sacramento area also.

In Rocklin, we expect 111 today and it's been almost the same all weekend. We had a power outage on Saturday at about 4. Lasted for about 2 hours. Luckily, AC's been going for several days and it was cool inside.

My 98-yr old mom lives with me. She's been diagnosed with dementia and forgets most things almost immediately. With the AC on, she says it's cold and will go out for a walk. I try to get her to take her walk in morning before it gets too hot. She likes to sit out on the patio. After 3 pm, she comes in saying it's way too hot out there. She's in and out several times a day -- too cold or too hot. Oh well, keeps her moving.

CA Central Coast micro-climates

There is a saying here that if you don't like the weather just drive a few miles in any direction.

Of course over the weekend it was just plain hot everywhere. No one in my town has A/C as the average temperature is in the 60's and 70's. Saturday was about 90 but just 2 miles east up the hills was 103. No A/C there either! Cheryl is correct about SB. The hills can get really hot.

North SLO County was about 114. We cancelled a family visit there.

Had breakfast outside at Zorro's in Shell Beach this morning and it was in the 70's with a slight breeze.

Down the road there was a marine layer near Pismo Beach but still warm. Tourists get faked out and wear sweatshirts. All-in-all looking to set up here for a nice weekend in time for our annual block BBQ.

Friday we will be in Morro Bay and it should be warm, for us that is. And you wonder why real estate is high in CA! It's no wonder the rest of the country hates CA. Terrible place to live!

By the way, here is a great weather map showing temps in various spots of the same town. You can check for your own micro-climates if you have them. See the bottom of the page.
