Vermont rates

Hello! I am new to this site and just signed up as a notary rotary. I live in the State of Vermont. I'm looking for suggestions as to what the standard rates are within my state. Thank you in advance for any information.

If you mean what is the "standard" for mobile notary fees, such as printing and travel, there is no standard. It would be wise to analyze your costs, the time required to perform the service, and what you think is a good hourly profit. You could look online or locally for programs that assist in setting up small businesses for guidance in this area.

If you mean what are the fees for notarization established by state law, it's confusing. The state notary handbook (p. 11) has this to say:

"Vermont law does not establish fees notaries may charge except for protests under seal ($2.00 per protest) and certificates under seal ($0.50 per certificate). 32 V.S.A. §1759. If you are a notary public ex-officio [justices of the peace, police officers, others who pay no fee for their commission], the law requires that you perform notarial services without charge or fee. 32 V.S.A. §1403(b)."

My take on it is the fees were set sometime in the early 20th century. The requirement to use a seal was eliminated in 1984. The protest is, for all practical purposes, obsolete. So the only notarial process for which a fee is specified, placing the notary's seal on a notarial certificate, is optional. As for what the legislature intended, I feel quite confident they had no clue what they were doing and were just bumbling along with no real intent.

As VT Syrup said the State website is not terribly helpful. You need to determine what your costs are and go from there. I have notary friends in the big city of Burlington that can do 3 or 4 loans a day and put on 30 miles total, so they understandably can charge less. I on the other hand in the NEK can do one loan a day because they are never in the same area and usually not even in the same county, so I must charge more for my time. Most of my loans involve a minimum of 50 miles rt and 3 hours of my day. My advice to you is figure out what you need for your overhead, and go from there. Do not underprice yourself Smile
