What Mapping Software Are They Using??
Got a call the other day to go to an area I cover. Quoted my fee of $xxx and they asked why so much, it's only 24 miles?
Its a min of 37 through the woods and that particular address was 50 miles from me! A good 1.5 hour trip.
This happens a lot. A few months ago, I got a call and the lady just insisted (nicely) the address was 3 miles from and I have never heard of that town. I checked it and the place was literally 5 HOURS from me.
Okay, vent done, I feel better.

Combination atlas and abacus utilizing Ptolemy's system
The more advanced ones have graduated to the Casio fx-7000G. Either way, Heliocentrism be damned! Geocentrism was clearly better....pffftt.

When such happens and the scheduler does not believe me, I ask them to put my address and the signing location address into Google Map. That way, they'll see directions AND the mileage. Otherwise, they could be using a zip code-to-zip code program that just shows the straight-line distance from one to the other (as the crow flies), which ignores mountains, bodies of water, and state lines.

While on the road last week, I get a call for signing for a town I'd never heard of. Scheduler knew it was about 65 miles from me as he had lived in my town and that it was north of me. I asked him north in which direction -- towards Tahoe up hwy 50, towards Truckee up hwy 80, towards Oroville up hwy 70? I asked him to look it up for me on GoogleMaps as that's a better gauge for my area.
He did. He was able to tell me exactly where it is (down hwy 80 then up hwy 5), that it was 66.6 miles from me and a 1 hour 15 minute drive from me. I thanked him and gave him my quote. He immediately accepted.

I once got a call directly from a TC for a location 200
miles away from me. I said sure, I'll go, if you're willing to pay for a 400-mile RT travel. She gasped audibly.
"But it's only 2 inches on the map!" I could hardly respond intelligently. "Yes, that may be true...but paper maps aren't to scale." "I'm using MapQuest. It's not a paper map."
O....M....G.

Wow!!! And, she got hired????
Reminds me of the escrow assistant who argued with me that their client doesn't want an Acknowledgment or a Jurat ... their client just wants their document notarized!
Rhetorical question: Where do they find these people and why don't they start them in the mail room or the supply room to learn their way?

Yoli, I had the exact same response from a person at a bank who had given the signer a form required BY the bank. She never did get that a notarization must have certain verbiage, either acknowledgment or jurat. So I finally asked the signer if she wanted to swear the information was correct, or simply acknowledge what was in the document.
"Just get it notarized" is a comment I often hear. I wish there were some way to get people to understand there's more to it that stamping a piece of paper.

Different perspectives and different mindsets...
Sort of reminds me of a title co (which shall remain nameless) that seems to call me whenever they have anything in California (although mostly So Cal). I'm always glad to hear from them and would happily accept signings from them within my coverage area, but the assignments they have here seldom are. They're from a relatively small eastern state and apparently don't really get how vast this state is - and how densely populated. (I think there's approx 30 MM people in the areas for which they've called.) That translates to lots of traffic and long drive times to most of those areas. (Fortunately, I'm usually able to refer them to one of my network members, so I don't mind getting those calls! )

I referred the caller to Notary Rotary.
When she accessed the site, she said, "Oh my goodness, thank you, I didn't even know this existed!" I am assuming she found someone, because she didn't call back. Nobody can drive 400 miles without a significant travel fee. This is, after all, a business.
I will agree that some companies are oblivious to how large California is. Even in this immediate area, 100 miles can take a long time to drive because of mountain passes, military bases, and so on. Heck, last weekend, it rained around the Olancha/Lone Pine area and created a flash flood in minutes, because the roads around here are not equipped to handle rain at all. A lot of things to consider.

Janet, they probably know they can trust you to refer them
to someone else who will do a good job for them. After all, that's why you form/join a network.

Not only do they use funky logic for the distance, they often go from my post office box, which is centrally located between my husband's office and our home. I usually tell them I can't fit into my PO box.
And as others have commented, over hill, dale, river, and around military base and airports does add miles that the crow flies over. Plus, in Oklahoma, we have these strange weather events that throw debris all over the place and knock out electricity. So we need to have time to deal with all those situations, in addition to the mapping program travel time.
