Expired State ID from 2004
Get to my signing and woman pulls out a State issued ID that was issued in 1999 & expired in 2004. Has no other ID but a Biltmore ID (what is that?). Then gets highly upset that I told her it was unacceptable and asked if she had any other govt or state issued current ID with photograph. She has nothing and was livid that no one ever said it had to be current and every where else it was accepted.
I assume cuz no one looked at the dates. Either way informed hiring parties who came back with a response from Title asking if I would accept a SSN card. Nope, I'll forward you a page out my notary journal of acceptable documents. I even placed a call to VA SOS who stated valid ID would be unexpired BUT it was my decision to determine if I will notarize with what I was shown.
Nope. I suggested they come up with two witnesses who will attest to her identity. Well it seems they maybe on a hunt for a notary who will notarize.
I just can't believe this woman went almost 10 years and no one said anything to her about her ID.

I'm surprised that the VA SOS said her DL had to be valid, since the VA notary handbook does not specify "valid" or "unexpired" for any of the documents listed on page 10, except for foreign passport. I agree that in VA, it's the notary's prerogative whether to accept an ID or refuse to notarize, so you were well within your prerogative to say no.

We can't use witnesses in IL unless that witness is known to both notary and borrower. What are the chances of that? I blame this on lender and title. NO ONE bothered to look at the ID's dates. Sad someone dropped the ball on this and its the bottom of the totem pole that gets to take the rap for it. Borrower is upset, lender is upset and so is title. Getting very tired of taking the flack for their laziness.

They didn't say it had to be valid. All she said was a valid ID is current. And it's up to me to accept it. She can't say whether or not. I chose not to.
However the BO said they didn't want me to come back even if they got witnesses.
Why are people walking around with years old ID? What's the purpose of having a current ID if its still going to be acceptable?
Well either way, I'm done for today and now I can sit back and sip some raspberry merlot and read my Title license handbook.

When they stop driving and they aren't traveling on an airplane or whatever, they or their family don't bother to get a state ID. By the time they contact us to notarize something, the signer is often too ill to go to an office to get the state ID. It's really a shame people are so clueless with something so important.

Well she wasnt too ill. Granted she was in a wheelchair but you can renew online from the DMV. At least in Va you can.

<<"VA SOS who stated valid ID would be unexpired ">> <<"All she said was a valid ID is current">>
Am I missing something?? Was taught by Bryce that "valid" meant current/unexpired - which is what SOC told you.
But as pointed out, Handbook somewhat vague (except for "unexpired foreign passport")

I had to turn a closing back yesterday b/c the borrower had no valid ID. He had a photo card from 1967 (!) issued by the PA liquor control board when he turned 21 so that he could buy alcohol back then. And he had a work ID. That's it.
I was basically harassed by the LO who kept calling me trying to "convince" me these forms of ID were valid. The LO and the borrower are telling the title company these IDs are fine, which they are not. So title is getting confused and not understanding why I won't just drive the 40 miles out there regardless.
Then the icing on the cake is the borrower told the title company he felt disrespected b/c I wasn't going to be able to accept those forms of ID. Somehow I am the bad guy.
This scenario ticks me off beyond belief. How do you go this long without an ID? Anyway, I'm sure they got another closer willing to accept what he had. I'm not willing to lose my commission and livelihood over it.
