It's sad

I went to Mc Donnalds the other day, I know it's not the best place in the world to eat but some times we get in a hurry and need something quick.

The girl at the register accidently total out the order and had to get out her calculator or phone to figure out that I had 40C in change comming back. It's sad that these kids today can't even do simple math.

I bet she could teach Hugh and I everything about a smartphone though.

Priorities are different for kids today than when I was young. Yes I was young once.

This probably needs to be in leasure but what the heck.

I was at the bank one day and I had a $600 check. I told the teller I wanted $200 cash and to put the rest in checking and she pulled out a calculator. She saw the look on my face and told me "Sorry, I was never good in math"

You cannot generalize everyone saying"kid's today"... My son is 16, in AP calculus, Physics, geometry, Algebra II throughout HS and straight A's. Maybe that's why they have to work at Mc D's? The majority of today's kids are smart, you cannot assume anything, you just picked a non fortunate one who doesn't think.

Young once

Hey Buddy, with a name like yours, it appears that you'll always be "Young". Don't sweat it. I agree, there are a lot of smart kids and a few not so smart. It's good that they are out there trying to work.

At 12 yo, I had a job on an egg ranch. I learned to make change when people came into purchase eggs. In those days, we had peewee, small, medium, large, extra large, and jumbo size eggs. We had duck eggs, guinea hen eggs and quail eggs. All different prices. So I would add everything up on a piece of paper, no calculator in the egg room, which was an old freight car to keep the eggs cool. I would then tell the customer the total and make their change right then.

I learned more from this job than any I've had since...customer service, housekeeping, vaccinating chickens, gathering eggs, by hand, grading them and cleaning them. The people who employed me were Norwegian, they knew my grandparents in MN. They were like my parents, great mentors even after we moved away and I took on waitressing jobs in a small beach town.

It was always fun to make change. I'll bet a lot of kids stress over it because it is truly a handicap.

Buddy, El Pollo Loco has better food, and you don't have to eat the skin on the chicken. They have a great chicken salad and the skin has been removed. You can also get a sr. discount of 10%.

El Pollo Loco is my fav - and pretty much the only fast food I ever eat these days! Smile Unfortunately for the rest of you guys, they're mostly just in the Southwest, so far. But ya never know...

Yup I miss El Pollo Loco! When I was in CA I made sure to eat at In-N-Out Burger. I didn't make it to El Pollo Loco - darn! There was also a good place in Lake Forest called Carmel's - not sure if it's still there.

I looked it up and apparently it's closed. The area where it used to be has been completely revitalized, several new restaurants, but I can't think of a good Mexican restaurant around there. (My favorite, a little further away and a bit more upscale, is Javiers at the Irvine Spectrum... Mmmmmmmm!! Smile)

So can relate, Cheryl. Grade school friend's parents owned

a Corner Store. Wood floors, the beautifully ornate manual cash register with the dreaded coin bins...

As I was brought into the fold, Leslie's Dad watched from somewhere and caught my panic at giving back ~change~, as I always believed I was "bad at math," and said: "You just tried to subtract in your head, huh? Looking at my feet, I was red as a beet, I nodded. He said: "Here, it's like this - and taught me to count up, not back. Bless his heart, from then on, I "got" Math.

What's the big deal? everything cost a dollar anyway. eliminate pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, we'll be able to figure it out then. IMO

I don't really know how I ended up in banking. I was 17 when I landed my 1st "adult" job as a teller. I worked at IBM while in H.S. Arithmetic stills confounds my brain at times!

I'd much rather be a journalist (some can probably tell from my posts). Hate numbers. Love words.

Worse (or is it worst) mistakes ever made on the job: Handing out the "bait" money at the bank on a busy payday Fri and locking the tellers out of the vault - with the timer!! I remember how upset I was about the marked bills and came into the bank manager to quit; he said, "I did the same thing once."

We learned out to make change by playing Monopoly.
