My experience with UPS notary
I typed up an affidavit to be used in a court case involving a notarization I did several months ago. I called a few notaries in my area, only able to reach one and she was busy so I took the aff and Jurat over to UPS.
The notary grabbed her stamp and pen - I asked her to please issue an oath. She said she'd never done that before. Since her stamp is expiring this year, I know that she is at the end of an 8 year commission. And never issued an oath? She said she had no idea how to do it....so I instructed her.
She filled out the Jurat but didn't put the year in....."28th day of June". I asked why she didn't write in year...she said there wasn't a separate line for the year. Really? If there is no break after month to put in year, you just forget about it?
In Indiana, we have a 1/2 page of instructions from SOS re notary rules. One of those says when you sign your name you must print your name underneath. Of course she didn't. I told her that she probably needs to pull up SOS website on notary rules and make sure she understands and adheres to them.
She thanked me for being nice to her.....I don't understand how UPS provides notary service to the public without having on staff notaries who know what the heck they're doing!

UPS probably figures if you have your notary commission, you know what you're doing.
So much for figuring ... even in CA where one has to take a course and pass an exam as a condition of being commissioned, even then there are those who either don't know or don't care to follow the rules such as administering an oath. It's just frustrating as all heck to those of us who are trying to fulfill our responsibilities!

When I need my signature notarized, I type the notarial cert....the only thing the notary needs to do is print his/her name and sign - that's it. The venue, date, my name, the correct pronoun and tense (i.e. is/she/her/her) - are all typed.
Not sure of your state's notary education requirement, but even in CA, the course only teaches one how to pass the test. I must say though that live classroom course is better than an online course. The human - from experience - can address things a computer cannot.

Interesting and shocking at best.
Makes me wonder how many souls are in possession of incorrect documents notarized by this wanna-be-notary!
Does UPS bear ANY responsibility for such an incorrect notarization?????????????????
I sincerely hope she takes heed in what you advised her.

Not unusual at all. I'm aware that the majority of
notaries out in the retail world (UPS, etc.) don't have any idea of the difference between an Ack & a Jurat. They only get whatever notary training the store offers--basic: get ID, complete journal, notarize. Except for our profession, I don't think the majority of notaries have a clue other than "sign & stamp".

I live in a 55+ community. Once a year we have to certify that we are still old. My wife and I sign the certification which has no notarial wording at all. I take it to the clubhouse and the association manager makes it official with her notary stamp. I laugh all the way home.

The UPS Store ---
--- I don't refer people to the UPS stores in my area any more after I sent my wife to one (for a POA in which I was named) earlier this year. The notary used the old Calif Acknowledgement for the POA. My wife also asked for a "Notary Certified Copy of the POA' --- instead he substituted the 'Copy Certification by Document Custodian' form, even though I had included the form suggested by the CA SOS with the documents Boy, talk about UPL. Of course the POA did not record. And 'Copy Certification by Document Custodian' does not fulfill the requirements of the Probate Code (#4307). I do not know where this notary had his head that day but it for sure was not on correct notary procedures. And I am glad the two mistakes were caught before it was too late. I shudder to think of how many others left his store with in-correctly notarized documents.

UPS is in the business of shipping packages. This is just a "customer service" add on. It is about the money.

Like everything else…..some good, and some not-so-good. I’ve read posts here from some ‘notaries’ with apparent very limited notarial knowledge. As for me I’ve referred many to my local UPS store, the notary there is just fine.

They may not actually have been a Notary at all...
When I took my 6 hour course, and test, the instructor had an intersting UPS story. When he went to UPS to get something Notarized, the real Notary was gone on break, and some non-Notary employee took over for the Notary, using her stamp. Needless to say, he set them straight.
