My first "turn-back"

6:00 appt scheduled yesterday for this evening, 40 minutes from my office, 45 minutes away from next signing (scheduled 5 days ago), very tight. Got docs at 2:00 today (not bad) with $1,500 due. Called Borrower, knew nothing about it. I called SS, They will contact TC. 5:00, called, no change. OK, Traveling, 25 minutes to appt I get a call that there's a whole new package that needs to be downloaded and printed. I lost it! I'm in a very rural area, no Staples or otherwise. I can't return to my office, I'll be very late for the next one. I said, this is unacceptable, I simply can't perform this one tonight. Fairly frequent client, but not the best $$ and slow payer (45 days). Hated to do it, but....
1. Did I do the right thing?
2. What mobile printer do you suggest?

You did the right thing. They made last minute changes, not you. You cannot make everybody late because they screwed up. Even if there was a staples, it is $$ out of your pocket. Best case, they pay you a print fee, and went back later in the evening. I have turned many back for late docs and cannot squeeze in. That's business.

Don't know that there's a right or wrong response to your situation.

It is what it is. Classic case of late docs but with a twist.

Possibilities: You could have called the borrowers, explained the situation and asked them if they wanted to drive to you to save oodles of time. (With SS OK, of course). If borrowers said no, then how late would they be willing to wait until you showed up? (And how late is too late for you?) Or ask SS if it's OK if they sign Saturday? If none of these were options then give the signing back. I'm sure there are other options; just think this scenario through and come up with other ideas since this will probably happen to you again. I can't relate to living in a rural area with no Staples or otherwise, (not to mention RI, which I think is smaller than my county) so ....

As far as saying, "I'll be very late for next one": don't ever even think that! NEVER let it cross your mind to push other borrowers around because a SS is jerking your chain. That is definitely not an option, ever. (Unless the stars are all aligned perfectly, and it just happens that it might work out if all borrowers can be happily accommodated...)

As for a mobile printer, that's been covered here many times. Just do a search.

Yes, of course, I diplomatically explained the situation to him ( he was happy I had given him the head's up beforehand). Me, too! I offered to meet them later, but that would mean closer to 8:00 pm or so (not good for him and his wife), OR, if docs could be dated for tomorrow (or another evening next week), I would most accommodate. Said he'd call LO, but haven't heard back. With new docs readily available, they must have contracted someone else. Getting big $25 print fee. Oh well, cost of doing this business. I'll check out the mobile printer comments, I just can't imagine one that can efficiently print 120 pages from my car!

Looks like you did all you could, RI! That's the way it goes sometimes.

I've never had a mobile printer, but I've read alot about them, and I'm sure you could set one up to print efficiently ... you need a converter and other stuff that costs some $$, but I understand it works well once you get going.

Staples has a Targus Power Inverter for $60 that will give 100w of 110 v. I plan to use it with a small HP laser printer if needed. Good decision to turn back that order.

Also, there's a couple posts in Msg #33325 by Brenda/TX about mobile printing. This might help as they give other message numbers to refer to fo info.

To the poster who has the 100w inverter, I'm not so sure this will be adequate, but that's JMO based on what I've read here.

Re: See this..

Linda, thanks for your references to past posts. This NR forum can be really helpful with so many experienced pros willing to share. I'll need to check the power requirement on my small HP laser printer.
Funny thing, ... looking at some of the 2007 posts in your reference there were many headlines of concern about how slow the business was. So many things either stay the same or come back around.
Thanks, Gary

"so many things stay the same"

yes they do Gary - if you go back to 2005 you'll see posts like "no pay, slow pay", "business slowing down" AND "FEES ARE IN THE TOILET!! WHAT'S GOING ON??" - (caps for emphasis, not yelling).

Yes, some things never change.

Re: See this..

I prefer to find a place where I can plug in my portable printer - Panera Bread, McDonalds,aFedEx location etc. It seems to work better. At worst, I might try to work it out with the borrower to go to their house and print as he or she is the ultimate beneficiary of the service.

I would have turned it down as well. When will the SS's start taking into account the impossible situations they put us in !?!

Good luck with that "Mobile Printer" thing, I sure don't earn enough to warrant spending even 'mo money. I have 1,050 notaries within a 10 mile radius of me !

Hey, Debra

.... I couldn't find the name you use in the active notary list on the SOS Web site, so don't know what county you're in .... so how did you find out there are 1,050 notaries within a 10 mile radius of you? Just curious!

I'd bet 75% are notaries cos their work requires it .... still that's alot of independent notaries left. Yikes!

Re: Hey, Debra

Easy, sort the SOS list by zip code. I have 295 in my small zip code alone. I have not counted the 10 mile radius, but, here in San Diego County I would not be surprised to find at least 3000 notaries.

It's the season for sticker shock - that's my first thought

Summer tax time always brings this on in June, with most tax bills coming out in July and most first pymts now being due in Aug - summer taxes will usually be collected up-front (estimated, usually at 150% of the previous year's amount).
