camera phones

When borrowers forget to bring copies of their IDs do you use your camera phone? I can't seem to get clear pictures of drivers licenses or other ID.

What is the secret?

Nope. I give them the fax number and tell them to

fax the copies to title before the end of the 3-day rescission period. I also tell them that failure to do that may cause a delay in the funding.

Then I let title know that borrowers didn't have copy available.

Linda, is correct on this one.

You are opening yourself up to charges of ID theft. In this sense, if one of your customers experiences ID theft and law enforcement or their attorney asks them who did you share your personal info with, you will be the first one they think of because they still have your business card.

I tell them up front, and if they don't have it, I ask if they sent a copy to their LO, if so have him/her forward one on. If not, they will need to send a copy to him/her to forward to title.

They photograph best when you tip/rest the license on the loan docs to prop it up. I never had success while it was lying flat, and then you would get the reflection if there was a light overhead.

Works like a charm. I prefer that they use their smart phone and email to me or the lender or title.

I do this all the time with my Iphone 4s and have no difficulties. It's just one more convenience I can provide my borrowers if they don't have copying capabilities at their home. On the Iphone, once you position over the license you touch the screen and that causes the camera to auto focus. I always have clear images when printed or emailed. The only thing I would suggest is not to try taking a photo right under a light. I move to a counter top or coffee table where there is no light directly over the source. Hope this helps ya....

Convenience, that's the basis for our business. Identity theft..If I was a person who was worried about that..I think Id be a little more concerned about that 75+ pages with my SSN and financials that person is walking through my door with as opposed to them imaging my DL.

I use Cam Scanner app on my phone and email it to the title company right there so I don't have to worry about it. I can secure it then delete it right in front of the borrower. Takes about 2 minutes. They seem to be pretty impressed, plus it gives them the added security that you are taking the time to secure their identity as well.

None for me, thanks.

I'm with Linda & Philip on this - have never and will never use my phone to take a picture of their ID. It's way too easy to lose a phone or have it taken, and since I can not 100% guarantee the security of my phone or the data on the card, I'll pass on that risk.

Re: camera phones Ditto

I'm with Linda, Philip and Renee on this. I don't want anybody's personal info on my phone. I tell them what's required on the confirmation call, if they "forget" I tell them what needs to be done and that's it.

Who ever is providing the instruction to get a copy of the DL should also tell the borrowers that is needed and why.

I'm reminded of a former post not so long ago

A notary who used her phone and would destroy the SIM card after xx number of uses and put in a new card - so all evidence was destroyed. - good safety practice..but

SIM card got jammed in the phone - she took it to dealer to remove - once they removed it they would not give it back to her to destroy - so all the pics of photo ID's were in possession of the phone dealer.

Nope...let the borrowers be responsible for the security of their own PII -

If someone sees, am I more vulnerable to having MY identity stolen??

Not to make light of a serious issue (ID theft IS serious) . . . agree that we're there to safeguard borrower's identity, but like my VA colleagues mentioned, with ALL the personal data I have on them, can't see how someone would worry about this too much. Of course, I certainly would like to think we don't have notaries on here who would sell people's SSNs (like the one in the news last month). Even so, not going to see THAT on my DL (got 99 other places to find, and that ain't one in my state).

I've only had to do it twice, and both times the copy was horrible. I prefer to leave the "convenience" to the signer, and say "since you were unable to make the copy, please do so at your earliest convenience to avoid a delay in funding your loan."

In Ca EVERYTHING is link through the DMV's computer database. However, you must have a SS#. So, with a SS# ( from loan Docs) you can get ID, any ID not just a DL. Rent vouchers, section 8, even a discounted METRO (NY) pass and much more.

Re: camera phones . . . about the "secret"

ServiceLink requested a more visible copy of my ID after I had sent a scanned copy (where EVERY word is readable, just photo a little darkened); so I tried the camera phone and sent to them.

Never heard back. No acknowledgment of receipt. So . . . I guessing THAT one didn't work, either!! May have been a good co. to have on my vendor list from what I've read here.

p.s. Scanned DL is in my computer, so if laptop gets stolen, I'll just do what I'd do if I lose the actual ID - and get another

I won't do it either. Too much of a security risk. I'll request a photocopy if I'm instructed, but if the borrower/s forget, I will not use my phone to take a picture.

One of my clients who is an engineer recommended it to me. You can download it from the app store. It has several functions. If you use the scan function, you take 3 pictures, can adjust frame, etc. It also will convert text that is scanned to pdf format. I use it all the time.

I have an Iphone and use an app called CamScanner which works great and comes out clear. You can even email the ID's straight to your escrow officer using this app.

more detail for you Pat. I use Genius Scan-saves to phone

not to sim, and you can email, fax or print from the phone.
I've emailed so can't speak to the fax but will try that out soon.

pointers: 1. turn off your auto flash 2. as someone else said, place on flat surface away from direct light glare-this is obvious when you look at the object being scanned. 3. wait for auto focus before snapping shot. 4. I find dark background surface works best.

once, you have taken your shot, email, fax, whatever you choose, then delete from phone. be sure to delete email files also.

its easy and quick once you get the hang of it.

Re: more detail for you Pat. I use Genius Scan-saves to phone

Deleting the picture does not remove it from the phone memory. It is the same issue as deleting a file from your computer - the file may be recovered and read.

Why I use my phone to scan

1. I find that often borrowers are not ready with their copies.
2. waiting for them to boot up their printers takes far longer than my scanning.
3. also, their copies are often unreadable and need to be retaken so I like having the scanning option.
4. BO love that I take care of it for them!

I always give them the choice-go make copy or I can do it for them.
Its true, there is the risk of ID theft but as others have said, borrower ID info is all over the file. there are inherent risks with everything we do. I minimize that risk as much as possible.

I am excited to learn about the camscanner app and its ability to password protect.
thanks to others for sharing!
