Background checks

Why can't companies provide us with a list of accepted companies from which to get a BGC instead of mandating that we use one in particular. There is absolutely no reason that I need BGC's from 3 different companies especially when they all contain the same information. This is becoming most anoying and expensive. I turned down one company with an explanation that I did exactly 3 closings for them last year and I was not going to pay for a new BGC. When they can't find anyone else in this area call me. I will apply for all free bgc's offered but I am not paying for more than 1 every 2 years.

Sorry, just recieved another request from a different companies and I am greatly annoyed and venting. grrrrrrrrr!!

What should be done ...

... is that a company should determine what it wants a background check to cover, and disclose those paramdeters. Then applicants could select whatever BGC provider they wish that covers those bases.

Agree, Lee... which may be a clue as to one of the real reasons we're getting so many more requests for bgc's lately.

What's very strange about this is the fact that I also do

a very few 'business verification inspections' in my town for a handful of national inspection companies. Maybe 5 or 6 a year! These inspections are quite snoopy and completed with the full co-operation of the inspected business. These, too, require background checks and over the past 6-7 years that I've been doing these, the company has always paid for it. Just recently, a new co. tried to recruit me, but they require that I pay for the bgc.... a whole $7.93! (I didn't do it as these are all very low paying jobs--just self-scheduled fillers.) Just one of those things that make you wonder what's really behind the supposed necessity.

Last two months 3 different companies

So sick of this BS, they all have the same thing. But if you want the work you jump through the hoop.

Hugh and others, LSI has done just what you asked.

I received this email this morning. It indicates the prefered source, an alternative, and specifies what four components are to be included if I shop for another source. Must hope it is not an April Fool's Day joke. I've removed my personal info, but left the rest of the message.

BACKGROUND CHECK UPDATE REQUEST
DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL
Our system indicates that your background check is about to expire. LSI is committed to complying with lender requirements and ensuring the protection and security of our customer’s personal information. LSI requires signing agents to obtain a background check every 2 years.
We encourage you to obtain a new background check and provide us with the results. The preferred method is the NNA (National Notary Association) background check as LSI recognizes the NNA’s comprehensive background screening which includes an Identity Verification Search, Office of Foreign Asset Controls (OFAC) Search, DMV Report, and Criminal History Report. http://nationalnotary.org
Signing agents who do not have a current background check, or who do not wish to go through the NNA certification process may obtain one from Lexis Nexis. Signing agents may obtain a background check by submitting information to: https://contractor.lexisnexis.com/CS/welcome.do?lsinotary.
Background checks from sources other than NNA or LexisNexis, will be reviewed but must include the four components (1) Identity Verification Search (2) Office of Foreign Asset Controls (OFAC) Search (3) DMV Report and (4)Criminal History Report.
Please note that LSI will NOT reimburse signing agents for the cost of the background check. Failure to provide a successful background check may result in deactivation of your profile.
Please return a copy of this email with your fax or email response.

The problem is that the NotRot background check *does* have those four components, and LSI regularly rejects it. They won't take mine... they wants me to renew my NNA one, which expired in November.

The NotRot one covers local and national criminal records, motor vehicle record, OFAC including GSA Sanctions and SDN list, SSN/identity and address history trace and National sex offender search.

Any background check touched by the checkee is useless. Far too easy to forge. This is why most of the time, when someone is requesting a school transcript, it has to be mailed by the school and not the student directly to the requestor.
