Jurat or ACK on "copies"?

Oldies but goodies . . . found info I needed on this 2011 thread Msg #392203 (and another). My question would be: As we cannot tell signer which to use, how is stamp choice determined on multiple copies?

btw, Told signer in question to wait (I wanted to research). Love the NR responses to having signer attest, then I notarize signature (only).

Place an Ack and a Jurat in front of the signer and have him (her) pick one.

Re: Jurat or ACK on "copies"? Neither (maybe)

The original poster was from Virginia. The VA notary handbook says in part "Each notary shall be empowered to perform the following notarial acts: (i) take acknowledgments, (ii) administer oaths and affirmations, (iii) certify that a copy of any document, other than a document in the custody of a court, is a true copy thereof..."

So if the notary is satisfied it is a true copy, the notary could do a copy certification. Of course, if the entity requesting the document were wise, it would require an official transcript, but maybe the use for the copies isn't important enough to do it the secure way.

One other comment: since the client asked for copy certification, the client HAS specified which notarial act to perform, and it's just a matter of the notary deciding if the situation is on the up-and-up.

Gerard, now you're getting into the "recesses" of my mind . . .

I just didn't feel comfortable doing the certified copy; then, after reading the older posts on the subject, I "determined" it would be more practical to have the client attest to the accuracy of the transcripts, then I could notarize his signature. The other posts seemed to support my supposition (of course, each state is its own "animal").

In Kansas the Notary must make the copy to certify it n/m
