Lazy Notaries
I did a signing last night where the real estate person and the loan officer were in attendence. I always start by saying there are some notaries who say just sign here, here and here, but I like to tell you what you are signing. Every signer to date has said " we appreciate that. " The real estate person in attendence said that the notary she uses just tells the people to sign these papers. She said " can I use you from now on?" yes
I had one clean up signing where the borrower said that the notary sat there and texted on her phone the whole time they were signing.
It's these lazy a$$ notaries who give the rest of us a bad name, and I believe it's the reason for pages and pages of instructions, one line one notarization, and low pay.
There must be a lot of notaries out there who don't take pride in their work.

If you dump the package on the BO's, sit there and text, you are probably worth around $60! Maybe the rest of us are doing this wrong. Next time, maybe we should walk in, hand the package over, say sign above the line where your name is printed. Mind if I smoke? Got anything to drink? Anything to eat?
Done yet? Cool bye.

Great idea, bagger!
Draw up a list of services you will provide depending on the fee offered. Example:
For a minimum of $100, you'll be a respectable NSA, explain docs, guarantee your work, etc. For $125, you'll be nice to borrower's dog, too and not scratch their tabletop with binder clips. But for $85, borrowers must come to you at a mutually convenient time and return docs to Fed Ex themselves. For $60, they get the point 'n' sign treatment while you file your nails and tend to other personal grooming needs, etc. (Flossing not included)
Kinda what Sears (I think) did with its Good, Better, Best - charging increasing prices for the increasing quality of similar products. Like: here's our top of the line clothes dryer or here's our clothes line for your back yard.
So when the signing confirmation arrives, you respond with your level of services provided commensurate with the fee. As in: here's what the fee you're paying will cover! HeeHee

"one line one notarization", REALLY???? You lump this
in with what you describe as a "Lazy Notary"???
This is a constantly debated interpretation of CA notary law and misapplied in this post. I'm sure you will have a few notaries that use the one line interpretation that are not the "lazy notary" that you describe.

You misunderstood.
I meant: The reason for the SOS directive of one line per notarization must have come from lazy notaries who don't fill out their journal correctly. Is that clear enough?

As clear as the constantly debated interpretation of CA notary law is.

Texting and on the phone is absolutely horrible.
As far as lazy, most of my BOs have refinanced before and they are familiar with the whole process. Also, many have read the documents via email from the lender. They appreaciate that I'm not doing a whole lot of hand holding. I'm familiar with all of the documents and if they need an explination I'm ready and able to help. Hopefully, my actions are not interpreted as "lazy".

I had a signing last night where the borrowers said they appreciated that we were going along at a good pace & that I knew what I was doing because the last notary took 5 hours to complete the signing. 5 hours! He showed up with the wrong docs, went to get the correct docs, and proceeded to talk on his phone (talking to his wife about how many fish sandwiches she wanted him to bring home...huh?), texting, and telling them about EVERY aspect of his life.

I have borrowers tell me all the time how stress free their closings are with me. On more than one occasion, I've had borrowers tell me that I am thorough but to the point. There are some documents I am not familiar with and have the BO read them if they wish. But that is rare these days.
Happy EOM!
