The heavyweight just weighed in
For those who did not receive it, Harry has now been in touch with the compliance officer for Fidelity and has submitted a compelling case in opposition to exclusive NNA background checks. In essence, he has told Fidelity the same thing that I have long contended: NNA is not a positive influence in our industry, and limiting background checks to those provided by NNA will wreak untold damage across the entire industry. In fact, he made the point in compelling fashion that the BGC offered by NotRot is superior to that offered by NNA.
I realize this is a business for Harry. Nonetheless, I have never seen him take any action that I considered counter to the best interests of our industry. From my perspective, he has always operated from the angle that what is good for the industry is good for Notary Rotary, and what is good for Notary Rotary he makes sure is good for the industry.
He certainly has done that with regard to background checks.

I'm not sure which one is the "heavyweight" here: the Fidelity C.O. or Mr. Harry.
Of course, my head aches and I can't breathe.
What I have been unable to get/ glean/ grasp about BGCs is WHY are they being called, NNA's, NotRot's, etc.? Shouldn't the compellingness (I have little idea what that means) of the case being presented focus on the VENDOR/service provider DOING the bgc? If xyz uses Crimcheck and so does abc, issue solved.
Seems like someone needs to get at the root and explain to the national guys that 3rd party servicer is the way the industry runs . . . and somewhere beneath all those layers is the same thing (just with someone else's stamp on it)

Go for it Harry. Sounds like Harry's army is larger than the competition believed.

Background check vendors often offer different levels of checks. The vendors could attempt to come up with an easy-to-understand set of words to show how thorough the checks are (maybe bronze, silver, and gold), but that hasn't happened. So at the moment it is the name of the notary organization that is serving as shorthand for how thorough the check is.

<<"at the moment it is the name of the notary organization that is serving as shorthand for how thorough the check is.">>
Shorthand: says a lot and definitely dilutes the real issue: "How thorough the check is."

A well-deserved attaboy
Many of you may not know Katrina Arnaud. She is a longtime signing agent, and, though she rarely posts, she frequents the NotRot forum.
Without publicly detailing her actions, Katrina has written Fidelity, and has been quite instrumental in evoking Fidelity's interest in the problems caused by the misinterpretation of the company's background check requirements. She may also have been instrumental in heightening Harry's interest in the issue. While a lot of us were simply fulminating, she's been busy -- and effective.
She deserves our appreciation and our commendations.

Awesome news. This is a post I want to remember, and in fact, I'm cutting and pasting into a word document and keeping in my prime folder re. Commission/BGS renewals.

Good!
And if anyone from Fidelity concerning this decision is reading this... I'm more than happy to show them the full BGC reports done for me, both from here and the NNA, done within the same month, so they can be compared side-by-side. The one done via CrimChek, the vendor Harry uses is far more accurate and complete. I've stated before that the one done through Backgrounds Online was, frankly... a little crazy.

Hooray & thanks, Harry! ;-) I took a personal stand on this
one & let my clients know that my bgc from NR was the only one I was going to provide. One co. has ties with NNA, and I forwarded some of the info from here. They were grateful for it. This whole thing smells, IMO, because it doesn't appear that it was FNF that sent out the emails in the first place. I'm taking a strong stand on this one, because I'm an independent business person, and can't be forced to join any organization as a condition of receiving work (sounds too much like union talk to me).
