What would you do?
Husband called to do an out of state refi with email. Quote our regular fee $XXX. They did not state that it is a split signing that they want all sorts of info faxed backs or that they want it sent back tonight. Docs come refi part is 110 pages (OK) then they send some TAX stuff to be signed....131 pages and every page I find out needs to be initialed. I am only signing the husband here in Mass. but when I asked for additional fee (and of course I have already contacted the signer and confirmed) they tell me this $$$ is what was agreed to no increase...so I say sorry cannot do it for that fee want XXX more...they tell me 1/2 of XX is all they can do. So I tell them sorry no can do and apologize but if they had said the requirements up at the call and knew the page quantity they would have been quoted what I was asking for....THEN she tells me that cancelling 3 hours before the signing time is UNPROFESSIONAL....WTF! I CALLED as soon as I got the docs...it was a total shock to me. Checking here I now know that this package size is normal but not for me. Am I wrong to turn it back???

If the details of the assignment are different than what was
discussed, you are within your rights to request an additional fee for the additional services.
If they will not increase the fee to an acceptable level, then by all means cancel.
Three hours is not last minute. They should be able to find someone to complete the assignment within that time frame.

Exactly what you did
Nor do I think a total of 241 pages is exactly 'normal'. Yes, I've had a very few that were that much, but have been forewarned (without asking, mind you) that it was a very large package.

Re: Exactly what you did
Thanks I don't feel guilty but feel sorry for the poor person who accepted. Not sure if they appraised the person of ALL of the particulars.

IMO it's totally out of line to expect 131 pages of tax
returns signed as part of the loan pkg. That many pages is the same size as a whole loan pkg. I got caught with one last week that was a refi with 187 pgs. + the HUD. I was fuming. Told them I needed an extra fee, and got the song & dance that there was only $xx available because of their close margin. I'm professional & it was only a couple of hours to the signing. I did see it through, but will surely decline any more signings from that co. When will they realize that we're at the bottom of the food chain & can't absorb all the extra costs of printing, signing, etc. IMO you were well within your rights to turn it back. Obviously, the requirements for the signing had changed. I hate to feel tricked or taken advantage of.

Being "nice" can be a fault, I admit. Bigger issue is that
the hiring party often has no idea how large the pkg. is going to be in advance. I know they're working on close margins these days just to stay alive in the biz. I'm not running a charity, and don't generally accept an assignment like that. By contrast, I did a small purchase signing last week that ended up with a total of 21 notarizations. We don't always know what's coming.

Also, there's a big difference from being "nice" than being
"doormat". A certain amt. of professionalism is required to be successful in this or any other biz. I've found that it usually balances out in the end.

I think it's unprofessional for them to surprise you with an extra 130 pages of "tax" stuff and expect you too include that for nothing.

Thank you all for justifying what I already felt...I finally emailed them suggesting that they be sure to contact the signer and I was told in no uncertain terms that I was not to contact the signer that they already had an attorney set up ...did they tell him/her what was coming? I doubt it.
