electronic bulletin board and advocate for a standard fee over and over again - the board might open themselves up to charges of "price fixing." Having said that, I ask an SS that used to give me a lot of business but who I only hear from occasionally now why I was out of favor. They responded that business was down in general and I might want to revise my fees. I ask them what would be competitive for a 150 pages loan, edoc, 35 pages of fax back. They did not want to suggest a number but said the next time they called I might want to consider the fee offered. Their normal offer was $75 for the above, which I turned down so often they don't call any more unless it is a difficult loan to get assigned. The current fee offered may even be lower than that now.

I encourage all notaries to stick with a rate where you make a profit and stay in business. Many of the Signing Companies are trying to get business with the Title companies by offering lower rates for volume business. We notaries all know that volume business without any profit makes absolutely no sense. Here's my .02 of advice: Don't accept the low ball offers, and let those SS go out of business (along with the notaries who are working for free). Continue to accept the assignments from good companies that are paying a fair rate for your time and services. This will help the good SS stay in business and weather the storm, while the crummy SS go out of business. Remember, support the good SS and don't support the bad ones. We want the GOOD companies to stay in business, because they are also the ones that treat us with respect and pay a fair fee, which it turn allows us to stay in this business we love!
