Interesting/funny GNW ...

Got a call yesterday for GNW for a DMV transfer of title. Asked all pertinent questions and they readily agree to $75 fee and they'll pay cash.

Get to the house. Young woman answers the door and is so happy to see me and comments on how punctual I am -- I had told her I'd be there by 3:00; got there at 2:50. We go into the kitchen and there's a young man and another young woman there. On the kitchen table is a HUGE stack of cash -- like you see in the movies!

Proceed to the business at hand. Young man is selling vehicle to 2nd young woman. Everything goes smoothly until it comes to my fee. Seems they were splitting the cost. The buyer hands me $40. The young couple is SHORT $2. Don't forget, there's all that cash on the table. They're not touching it. They finally scrimp together enough in quarters to make up the $2!! Smile LOL

Would be difficult to say, "Oh, just forget the $2," when you could see they could afford it.

Probably literally spent their "last dime" to buy the car. Don't see too many folks paying cash for anything nowadays - let alone an automobile! Good for them.

I remember when I purchased my 1st new car years ago, I was a PT teller at a bank (they hired me straight out of H.S. and paid something absurd, like $5/hr). Auto dealer actually allowed me to drive the Sentra home (oh, that new smell) - anticipating a co-signer. But I had other ideas: I was <determined> to get the thing on my own.

Well, this was late 80's and I applied for loan and spoke directly to the branch mgr's Mgr. He asked, "Are you sure you want to do this? My wife and I paid less for our first house!" In the end, he gave me the loan.

That's when I was introduced to the world of credit (saw all that interest to be paid) AND depreciation; and I came to appreciate the C's of lending. I most definitely didn't have Capacity or Credit - but someone thought I had some Character (albeit whatever was still wet behind the ears Wink

Good for you, NVLS! Someone was a good judge of character.

BTW, the couple scrimping for the $2 were the sellers of the vehicle. It was their cash on the table! That's what made it next to impossible for me to say "forget the $2." Wink

Michelle, actually I see quite a few cash transactions, everything from vehicles to mobile homes. Oftentimes it is Hispanic buyers. (Not making any judgments, just sayin'.) Once had to sit, at the request of the seller, while about $20,000 cash was counted a couple of times.

Yep, culture sure does play a role

A lot may be undocumented or in jobs with erratic pay (like ours!), so banks are just out of the question.
I sure think twice when scheduling pymts in advance - counting on funds. Facing a $50 bank fee is about as bad as facing deportation. Smile
