Lay Offs
I've gotten messages from 2 contacts at 2 different Title Companies that they have been laid off this week. Oh so sad.

Sad indeed.
However, that in itself just goes to show us how slow things are in our industry ... lay offs at EOM!

They’ll now be joining us as NSA’s. Can you collect unemployment while (sort-of) working as a NSA? Does unemployment still go on forever?

I think as long as your income is within the limit you can still collect. My question is can you still collect unemployment for 3-5 years? Jeez.

My neighbor collected for 2 years. It has now ended for him and he still cannot find work, even part-time. He has some health issues as well which somewhat limit him.

Snowflake: I "feel" for your neighbor and anyone else trying to find steady work opportunities and pay for healthcare to improve their condition(s). I wonder what percentage of those people facing lay offs will need and benefit from the healthcare act. Not going to get into politics - here or anyplace else. Human leadership credentials/track record Horrible. Just saying that if someone cannot find work - suitable with their condition - they could benefit from contract opportunities (just don't look to afford much healthcare settling for these low fees); they just can't stay "off the grid" for too long. Sometimes we have to Go where the work is!

I collected for over 3 years. Had pension, Social Security AND NSA. It wasn't much unemployment, but I did collect for over 3 years.

Re: Lay Offs (and pensions)
That's more than I can say for here. When chronic health issues prevented me from continuing FT (30+ hrs), I worked part time and decided to finally put my notary commission to work; I was solicited by no one about the <glorious> nsa life where you can make tons of dough in your spare time . . .
I was familiar with the mortgage industry and had used notaries for a couple of my own home refinances. It took awhile, obviously to get started, so while I was marketing and learning about being a nsa, I returned to work PT doing contract work. ONLY the jobs that reported the income (the others I filed) showed up during the work quarters that SS reviews for unemployment; so when I got laid off (or left) an assignment, there was no way to collect any unemployment (they said I was self-employed and didn't have "enough quarters" showing recently reported income). Unbelievable! Working since 15.
Funny thing is, having worked in sales, I never expected to make a living doing notary work. Sales isn't easy (nothing is). So my reality is much different than many here; based on My reality, being a younger worker with marginal health (mother and I have auto-immune conditions) hasn't gotten me much attention or compensation. I'm just grateful to own a piece of property in a wealthy community that I could rent to good tenants
For any who think in terms of the b/w issues when it comes to the workforce, look again - Hard - at your neighbors (young and old), family members, friends; they all have their own reasons for doing what they do . . . and bottom line is, they are just trying to survive and stay productive members of society like everyone else.

Guidelines about work and unemployment vary from
State to State, you can go to your state unemployment web site and I would venture all the rules and regulations are explained.
As far as I know the Fed program ends this December and back to 26 week max on collecting. At one point in NJ you could of collected for 2 years or longer with the extensions and fed program.

I Know you can in Illinois, I did it. They consider this a part time job, sort of like Avon. And if you got full time work you would stop this.
