Quality issue from FASS
I just received a quality issue from FASS. This was their comment: "Notary did not use Fedex bag to prevent release of confidential information, cardboard envelopes are not secure".
Have you heard about this before? I always send back all my packages in cardboard envelopes, unless they send a self return envelope.

I received wet/dirty docs in shredded fedex bag-the problem
wasn't with you, it was with fedex!

Both of the FedEx stores I use require the bag. With the size of the packages we send, it's supposed to be a requirement. Cardboard is only to be used up to 1/2 lb.

I always go into Fedex so that I can get a receipt. All the Fedex's I use, they have never told me to use anything different.

This is from an email I received from FASS on August 6th,
Attention Signing Agents.
FED EX / UPS LEGAL SIZE CARDBOARD ENVELOPE ISSUES
WE ARE RECEIVING REPORTS THAT SOME DOCUMENT PACKAGES SENT TO FIRST AMERICAN IN LEGAL SIZE CARDBOARD ENVELOPES ARE NOT SEALED PROPERLY AND SOMETIMES RESULTING IN OPEN PACKAGES AT TIME OF DELIVERY TO FIRST AMERICAN.
DUE TO THIS ISSUE OF OPEN PACKAGES/POSSIBLE LOSS OF CONTENTS AND PRIVACY ISSUES, PLEASE USE THE PLASTIC OR PAPER LARGE PAK FED EX/UPS ENVELOPES INSTEAD OF CARBOARD STYLE ENVELOPES.

I did go back through my mail history and didn't have that email. I am sure that I would have received one.

Fed Ex once told me....
that the plastic bags are cheaper than the cardboard envelopes or study paks. could be a $$ issue that they are looking to cut costs on......

I was always told the opposite was true--envelopes one rate,
and the plastic are paks. I don't think it matters a lot, because they go by weight.

After looking back, August 6th was the second notice/reminder. The first email was on June 24th. Sorry that you received this quality issue, they are tough!

I don't recall receiving that email and it's not in their file. However, that is something I wouldn't consider keeping as I always keep docs together with binder clip then put docs in a 10x15 clasp envelope and then into a large pak. Just my way of keeping docs as neat and as secure as possible.
Okay, I take that "always" back. If it's a one-pager (i.e. QCD), I won't use the binder clip, clasp envelope or large pak. In those few cases, I'll use a regular cardboard envelope. In my short experience with FASS (since March 2013), I haven't had any one-pagers.

Picky, picky, picky. I don't work for them, and always
ship in the legal size envelopes. I make sure they're well sealed, of course. If there's any chance of opening (large pkgs.) I seal it with clear packing tape to make sure. Sounds like someone is being careless (gee, imagine that--:-) LOL).

Memoir of A Former FedEx Employee
I worked for this company for 16 years. In the early days I was a courier, and you wouldnt believe what people tried to stuff in envelopes. I went to a drop box and pulled out an 8lb letter. Yes 8 pounds!! Its supposed to have an 8 ounce limit. Someone got mixed up I guess. the letter was filled with metal hinges.
Later in my career I managed the OS&D (Over Short and Damaged) department at the sorting facility of one of their major metropolitan offices. I had one whole bin dedicated to mounds of loan paperwork that had burst from people over stuffing the envelops. Once that 3 pound letter hid that 35mph sorting belt...Pooof. Hundreds of documents everywhere. We would try our best to sort out, but it would just collect under a bin that caught things like that.
In short..Don't over pack those letters. Supplies are free to their big customers. The absolute toughest pak FedEx had was the one made from Tyvek..they discontinued about 3 years ago. You could pull a car with those things. We used to use them for outer shoe covers to keep our feet dry on the flight line!!

James, you and my husband should get together and share stories. Only his wouldn't be from the perspective of couriers (God love you for doing the job you did) but from the things that go on with management (he has been in management now for almost 15 years, worked his way up from Ops to Sr. Manager) and what management has to deal with from TPTB.

I did not get the FASS memo regarding using the bags . . . hmmm. But that is what I prefer to use anyway so it has never come up as an issue for me like it did for you. You can try disputing the error based on not receiving the memo, but most likely will not be removed. They are tough that way. Just ask me!!! But I personally love FASS and try to stay in their good graces.
I like the bags because the docs, no matter what size, easily sip in and out of the bag. IMO, the cardboard envelopes are hard to load and unload.

Use both!
When I have an extra large package I put them in the sturdy pak and put that inside the bag. I have been getting FedEx sturdy paks #150949 that expand which comfortably hold most docs. UPS sturdy envelopes are the worst, cut too short and too narrow.

Glad I'm not the only one that got dinged on this. I checked my email and received no first or second notice on the Fedex packaging. I started using cardboard envelopes for UPS/Fedex/DHL back in the dark ages of signings because Transcontinental Title (ironically BOUGHT OUT by First American) required the use of cardboard envelopes because they stated they had to pay higher costs if we used the plastic.
FASS's quality issues are virtually impossible to dispute, although I do regularly. If they state I missed filling in some field, I ask for proof through email or fax. Why in the world would I accept culpability for something I cannot see. Besides, they should use it as a training opportunity. I do accept dings for quality issues I'm busted on, such as failing to update the webpage by the allotted time.
The only reason I stay with the cheapskates is because they pay lightning fast, and pretty much are a no-brainer. But I do resent getting slapped on the wrist (although many times they have justification). Their methods of getting it across are a bit elementary school in nature. Plus, the "quality issues are not intended as a reprimand" statement is laughable. It IS intended as a reprimand.
I once replied to an off the wall quality issue with "Where is the page on the website to report quality issues related to FASS?" I got no reply, oddly.

I also got dinged for this. I called the title company and was told they told FASS they wanted the plastic not the cardboard pac. Title said FASS was supposed to inform all notaries of this. It has been my experience FASS will slap a quality issue for anything. I got one once for not having an affidavit signed. I looked through my records and the affidavit was not even in the docs. Called title and they said it was not in package and they called FASS and it was removed.

I remember when you had to use the cardboard
envelope for First Am. As for those conjured up QIs. This company IMO has no regard for its notaries. Perfect job, Good job, bad job, all the same to them. They will never have your back no matter what.

I so agree with you. We should be able to report their mistakes that we have to fix. I have disputed many with them. When the docs are not on time and delay the closing I get slapped for not reporting it closed on their site, before the signing is even finished. Or when they cancel on you and don't bother to call and let you know. They just take it off the site. While I'm saving that slot for them and lose money. I have gotten alot of emails latley about Notary errors. well, if they would stop playing game with their notaries to see who will take the lowest fee for their huge packages. They don't even offer travel fee any more. They need to stick with a fee and pay it, stop playing games. Then they would get quality notaries.
