"Is using a military-style weapon to massacre people a "lawful purpose"?
Of course not, but is using a military-style weapon to shoot targets or tin cans a "lawful purpose"?"
Well, it's "lawful" but certainly a stupid use for such a powerful weapon...
I think you have to look at those who use it to shoot targets and tin cans versus those who use the weapon to kill people - which is what it was designed to do - and decide what the better good is. The gun was not designed to shoot targets or tin cans or even hunt animals - it was designed to kill people quickly. From the research I've done, I've learned that many members of the military don't fire these weapons on full auto because that causes the barrel to drift up and make the rifle less accurate.
That means the military tends to use them the same way civilians who own them use them - semi-automatic - and the military is not shooting at targets and tin cans, they're shooting at people.
