We don't know what his net worth really is - these are best-guess estimates based on his known assets, but they don't mention his liabilities. He is heavily leveraged, and some of those loans are coming due this year. And he is not liquid; in order to pay those loans, he will probably have to sell off assets, and most of those assets are in underperforming real estate. Anyone want to buy a failing golf course? It's one thing to be a billionaire on paper, but something else entirely to owe almost that much to creditors.
The myth of Donald Trump as a successful businessman was started by Donald Trump in the late 70's. He fooled Forbes into including him on their Top 100 list by telling them that he personally owned property which actually belonged to his father, which more than doubled the value of what he actually owned. His big success was the Grand Hyatt in NYC, and he did that with his father's money and connections. He has bankrupted 4 casinos (one of them twice), had the banks take away a hotel, a commuter airline, and a yacht, has been involved in several scams such as Trump University and a MLM company that sold questionable nutritional products, and has licensed his name to dozens of products that also failed (anyone want to buy a Trump Steak?).
If he was a successful and wealthy as you think he is, why is it that no bank will deal with him? His last hope was Deutsche Bank, and they just announced they wil not do business with him anymore - and he owes them a lot of money. Signature Bank is closing his personal accounts that total several million dollars, and has publically called for him to resign (even though his term ends Wednesday at noon). What billionaire do you know of who is in this type of fiscal crisis?
So if you want to continue to believe that he's worth billions, go right ahead and knock yourself out. It would just be yet another lie that he told, and you bought. |
