The law, as originally proposed, DID target Trump, but Cuomo - who is no fan of Trump - said he would never sign it, so it was rewritten to include every NY citizen. That was seen as too broad, so it was amended to apply to only those serving in federal, state, and local positions. That's still thousands of people. It was also amended to require the redaction of Federal tax return data, so it wouldn't violate any federal laws.
New York State has the right to determine who can and cannot see the state tax returns of its citizens. Trump is not mentioned at all in the law. IF it gets to SCOTUS and they agree to hear the appeal, any decision they reach would not involve Donald Trump. |
