Re: Looking back in history, any thoughts?

Not gonna happen here - we're too dependent on each other, and no state can go it alone. There's a faction here in TX that has been agitating for secession for years, but it will never work because TX would lose federal funds as well as federal property such as Fort Hood. Who would maintain the federal interstates tat run through Texas? It also raises the question of what you do about state borders.

A lot of people don't know this, but when TX was annexed by the US they had an agreement that three more states could be created from the main state. That would give TX 6 more senators and an unknown increase in the House. The US said "Sure, we can do that" just to get them to sign on, knowing full well that the Constitution prohibits creating a state from another state. The only state that was able to do that was West Virginia, and that's only because Virginia had seceded from the Union and was no longer officially a state.

So no, parts of America are not going to break off - what we do we do as a union. If you want to break off, you'll wither on the vine.
