Maybe parents should quit coddling their offspring? Let 'em work. It's possible to work and go to school. It may take a little longer to get that degree, but, they're also getting some experience.
Example: When I was a senior in HS, I already had enough credits to graduate by January. However, I wanted to graduate with my class in June. So, second semester, I worked at the HS bookstore (for credit) and went to school part-time. Then, during college, I worked part-time and went to school part-time. Later on, I was able to use those experiences and those references on my resume.
Many of the larger companies offer internships for no pay/low pay. Some research companies need assistants, but don't have those positions in their budgets. Maybe do some volunteer work.
As we all know, it's not easy getting started. However, it is doable. Just gotta put some effort into it.
