Fun fact: "romance languages" are a real thing. They're also referred to as Romanic Languages, which is probably more accurate and less misleading than Romance. They all evolved from the Vulgate Latin that was spoken in Rome. The main ones are Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Romanian, but there are other lesser languages and dialects that evolved in the same geographic area.
Spanish is probably the easiest to learn, followed by Italian which as you found out is very similar. I took both in high school and college, along with a couple of semesters of French in high school; had a lot of trouble with French because the pronunciation was more difficult.
Because I never used them after leaving school, I pretty much lost my ability to speak and understand all three although I can still read Spanish and Italian reasonably well. I'm trying to re-learn Spanish because it would come in handy here in Texas. |
