Colorado is known as Hail Alley. A lot of property roof damage and vehicular damage running into the billions of dollars yearly. Roof/hail damage are specifically spelled out in insurance policies—age of home and roof. Claim amount is based on the age of the roof. The last claim we filed, adjuster came out and after deductible said they would pay, I believe it was 70-75% because we were honest and said roof was 10 years old. Hail is strange as it is hit or miss in a neighborhood. It may hit every other house, every third house, etc. The neighbor’s roof was every bit as old as ours. They had very slight damage with same company and basically same policy but different agent. Their adjuster came out and inspection report written up as very little damage. They called Insurance Commission and said we were getting new roof, why couldn’t they. An independent adjuster sent out. His report said that because they were right next door to a house with substantial damage, it only made sense they get new roof. They lied and said their roof was 5 years old, and on-the-spot got a check for 10O%. The check was made out to mortgage lien holder as well as them. Two days later they drive a new vehicle home. They had used the insurance check as down payment, somehow forging the signature for mortgage lien holder and car dealership accepting it. The husband along with drinking buddies half-a$$ repaired their roof themselves. Insurance fraud at its best and one reason Insurance costs so much and why they pay so little. Two years later I went up to insurance company to remove mortgage lien holder as we’d paid off the mortgage. Instead of being a proud moment because of our accomplishment, it turned out to be a day from he!!. A couple weeks later, I happen to look out and see a woman with camera in the yard taking photos of yard, house and garage. She was doing an inspection, A week later an insurance cancellation notice arrives in the mail stating that “without a mortgage, we have become an insurance risk, therefore they were canceling us even though there were no structural or safety issues present.” This, from a major insurance company where we had filed one claim (roof) the entire 15 years of our mortgage. |
