I've heard that, too - both that Omicron is more than twice as infectious, but that it APPEARS that cases are mild. I believe there's much yet to be figured out. Lots of cases have been with people who were vaccinated, but that could mean a variety of things, all of which it's too soon to know.
One of the things I'm curious about is whether or not getting infected with Omicron lessens the likelihood of getting Delta. In other words, could Omicron somehow snuff out Delta or other variants. If that happens, Omicron might be a good thing. BUT, I suppose it could be possible that vaccines are just less effective against it with all its changes.
As for continued mutations, with so many Delta variant cases still out there, there's plenty of opportunities for the virus to continue to mutate in all types of directions. My guess is that it's just as likely for it to become more dangerous as less so.
Only sure thing is that we'll know more in a month - and more yet in two...
