I have read that transcript three times, just to make sure I didn't miss anything. At no point does he say anything about tearing families apart.
Here's what he said at one point: "That’s why over the past six years deportations of criminals are up 80 percent, and that’s why we’re going to keep focusing enforcement resources on actual threats to our security. Felons, not families. Criminals, not children. Gang members, not a mom who’s working hard to provide for her kids."
And the only reference to separating families was this: "Are we a nation that accepts the cruelty of ripping children from their parents’ arms, or are we a nation that values families and works together to keep them together?"
If you took that last to be proof that this is what we were doing at the time, you have a serious problem with reading comprehension.
