You think NNA shows up for state hearings?
Posted by Linda_in_IN on 3/22/19 3:01pm

To the best of my knowledge, the NNA was a no-show in Indiana at the committee hearings I attended when the legislature was revising notary law. I don't even think they had anything sent to be read into the record. Notarize was there and spoke, but also there in a greater show of force and more compelling testimony were representatives of the office of Indiana Secretary of State, Indiana Land Title association, the association of County Clerks of Indiana, and a couple of notaries who spoke from personal experience (myself included). I don't think the NNA was even at the table during initial or other discussions on research and verbiage of the final 2017/2018 legislation; their name didn't come up as interested parties during the hearings I attended. To be fair, during the first round in 2017, RON was taken off the table and not even part of the discussion as notaries and other parties were more focused on other items. RON did make it back to the table during the 2018 session and because of further research, and tweaking of the language it was included and passed into law. It takes effect July of this year, 2019.

This is one reason why I don't support that organization. In the few years I did belong, all they wanted was money--there was nothing I saw to justify the ROI of membership so I didn't renew after 3 years. The other is the "mandate" regarding their background checks. All of my BGCs have been through NR and I have yet to have a logical, sane explanation as to why it does not match or best that from that other group. I printed out the post from Harry several years ago when this first reared its ugly head regarding the scope of the NR check, and if needed am not afraid to quote that verbiage to the individuals/entities that say it won't work. I have yet to have someone, after hearing my argument, still say no.
