I think you have a point, but what I'm reading here, perhaps between the lines, is that there's a big difference between a hiring co dictating how we conduct a signing for them and them dictating how we handle administrative aspects of running our own businesses. They have every right to set requirements for the former, but when they start intruding into dictating the latter, I agree that they're crossing the line to treating us as employees.
Having said that, there are grey areas here, particularly when it comes to security of borrowers' data. I think it's OK for a company to require certain standards be met, but they shouldn't be able to dictate how an independent contractor goes about meeting those standards. I think securely keeping a copy of documents until we get paid is a good idea - and has come in handy for me more times than I can count.
