In spite of the great experiences we're privileged to have from time to time, this is no longer a business I would recommend for anyone.
Someone on this forum once said that people we sit across the table from think all we do is "flip and stamp". I let people know that I love being my own boss, but that this business isn't what it used to be. If they want more info, I might let them know about the increased challenges in just becoming a notary, some of potential liabilities we could face, and the challenges of getting paid by some hiring parties these days. That's usually the last I hear about it...
Becoming a notary in California is much more costly than it used to be and people should know what they're getting into before taking the plunge. In fact, years ago, I used to hear from lots of people that "I just got my notary", or that they we're going to "get their notary", or that they knew someone who did/was. These days what I hear is "I used to be a notary", or "I know someone who used to be", but they've decided not to renew. For many, it wasn't as easy as what they expected (few things in life are...), so they moved on.
Can't say I'm sorry about that. I'd like to feel comfortable that people who get into this business are going to take it seriously, regardless of the reasons they decide to get commissioned.
