I just had a gentleman call me for general notary work regarding a beneficiary on a life insurance policy that an Uncle owns who is in a mental institution, he wants me to go to his Uncle and have him change the beneficiary of a life insurance policy over to this young man's mother when the aunt is the actual beneficiary. He didn't seem to understand that if this man is mentally incapacitated that I cannot notarize his Uncle's signature changing the beneficiary. He told me other Notaries in Maryland were willing do it. If there any Maryland notaries reading this know that you will be opening a can of worms if the aunt who is the currentl beneficiary decides to take it to court after the uncle dies stating that he was mentally incapacitated when the notary notarized the document. Furthermore in a state of Maryland we can only charge $4 for an acknowlegement and 36 cents a mile, a maximum of $5 travel fee. We can not charge an administrative fee, its against Md law. Actually it sickens me that a Notary would be lacking in scruples and do anything for money. He told me a Notary was willing to do it for $80.00. |
