Like Ilene said, it is not the notary's responsibility to find any type of witness - whether it's for signature by mark or credible witnesses. If the witnesses want to be compensated, they can work that out with the client. Because you are notarizing signatures in this transactions, I wouldn't advise you have your wife sign as a witness. Witnesses for a signature by mark can be strangers, so maybe their neighbors would be willing. Otherwise, the borrower's loan officer needs to get in gear and gather up 2 witnesses for this signing.
