I thought about taking thumb prints, but I decided against it. My reasoning is that here in Indiana we are not required by law to keep a journal, so thumb prints seem a little excessive.
From my observations, the UPS store clerks/notaries do not even record notarial acts in a journal. They just say, "next." With lines out the door during peak times, I can understand their reasoning for not recording every notarial act in a journal. I have never seen a UPS store clerk/notary take a thumb print. Although it is not required by IN law, I keep a journal and I will gladly take thumb prints if clients specifically ask for them.
I would imagine that a thumb print can be useful in helping to convict or exculpate someone for fraud. However, there are some very clever crooks out there. No doubt some of them figured out how to get around a notary thumb print.
