I am truly sad, CJ, that you and other notaries suffered huge losses at TL Signings devious hands. I know this sends everyone a loud message. It's unfortunate that there are more ill intentioned SS owners than well intentioned. Proof is in the numbers of companies that have slipped away without paying their notaries over the last 15 years. Suddenly their websites are down, phones are down, no fax, no email. POOF!
Look hard at companies who have no business licenses, operate out of commercial mail centers, no state business filing, subcontracting notaries, just a few red flags. A company that is a safe bet is likely listed here in SC and has good ratings. Get names of owners/schedulers, how long in business, and other pertinent information just in case you must put on your Hector the Collector hat.
Notaries should always keep copies of checks they receive for payment. You never know when you'll have to use the banking information (ABA, account information, address on the check, etc.). Remember that a checking account must have a fictitious business name statement on file to open an account, and that statement is filed in the county where the business is operating).
If notaries are working for companies that do not pay before 90 days, they are at risk of being "left holding the bag." Bag of tricks and no payment.
