Taxes are only part of it. California also has special refining requirements to produce cleaner burning fuel for air quality, which tends to deteriorate during hot weather. (Heat inversions - especially between mountains - trap not only hot air, but pollutants. I believe it happens in Denver, too?) So we're currently required to buy what's referred to as "summer blend", which is produced primarily (if not exclusively) for the CA market. My lungs appreciate it - and I'm happy to pay that little bit extra to breathe a little bit cleaner air! |
