With all due respect, I disagree, unless I'm misunderstanding the OP. If we get a check that we don't know what it's for, it's possible that it could have been misdirected. That could mean that one of our colleagues somewhere is still waiting for payment for that assignment. Mistakes happen, but if it was your check you were waiting for, I'm sure you'd want someone to do what Karla suggested and have the courtesy of taking the time to send a snail mail inquiry.
Kudos, Karla! I think sending them a letter is a great idea, if you can't find any other way to reach the client. It's a bummer that you have to do that - and checks with no useful connecting info is one of my tiny pet peeves, as well.
