Those "local calls" you think you're getting are an example of something called "neighborhooding", in which a scammer spoofs a phone number that has your area code and three-digit exchange in the hope that you'll think it's a local and will answer. They have no idea whose actual phone number they're using and they don't care - the goal is to get you to answer the phone.
I see this a lot - sometimes four or five times a day. When I moved from NY to TX about 7 years ago, I decided to keep my cell number. As a result, I get a ton of calls from numbers that have the same area code and three-digit exchange. Since I'm now half-way across the country I know these are not local calls so I just ignore or block them. |
